JUST WATCHED EM SINK THE USS ORISKANY ON THE DISCOVERY CHANNEL. A FISHING REEF IN FLA. IS BETTER THAN THE FATE THE HANNAH SUFFERED. THE BIG O WAS IN THE RESERVE FLEET IN BEAUMONT, TEXAS FOR SEVERAL YEARS BEFORE SHE WAS SENT TO CORPUS, THEN ON TO HER END. I TRIED SEVERAL TIMES TO GO ABOARD HER WHEN SHE WAS IN BEAUMONT WHICH IS NEAR MY HOME. THE SHOW WAS WELL WORTH WATCHING AND IM SURE IT WILL BE SHOWN AGAIN.

I served on the Hancock in the spring of 72. I was going through my cruise book the other day. On the page "In Memoriam" the seven airdales I was wondering if you know the circumstances of their death. I was on deck . when one of them was killed in an accident and I cant find any of the names on the wall. Does anyone remember this.

Keep up the good work, the Hannah will live on. Would be happy to hear from any of my former shipmates. I worked a lot with R Division, and they were kind enough to let my use the welding rig. Did a lot of work for Navigation, and knew a couple of the ships carpenters, if fact tucked away some where I have a desk sign made from the flight deck, as well as a piece of the old flight deck shaped like the ship with CVA 19 0n it

I came aboard The Fighting HANNA November 1963 (the day President John F. Kennedy was killed). I couldn't find my way around for awhile since the crew was on the flight deck during ceremonies. I was assigned to V-6 Ground Support and stayed there for the duration of my tour which got me out three weeks early do to Deployment for WesPac 64-65.

I think Wayne does a super job maintaining this website. The problem is, as long as it is an open forum, anyone can post whatever they want as often as they want. Also, whenever you post your e-mail address here it is immediately harvested for spam mail purposes. I finally figured out what was happening and no longer post my correct address, hence no more spam. It's a shame but a fact of cyberspace life. The only way around this is a site that requires a password. I would be in favor of that for members-only as far as posting is concerned. An open site for reading, but password protected for posting. Want to post?..then join up and pay dues and get issued a password. If anyone abuses it then bar them from posting---problem solved. Make e-mail addresses available only to members. Just some thoughts on the situation.

Partial obituary was published in the Albany (NY)Times Union on 9/9/2006. Cioffi, Lawrence A. NISKAYUNA Lawrence A. Cioffi M.D., of Niskayuna, died on September 7, 2006 following a long battle with Parkinson's disease. A retired physician. He was a navigation officer in the U.S. Navy aboard the aircraft carrier USS Hancock during World War II and as an assistant to Admiral Chester Nimitz. He was present on the USS Missouri for the signing of the Japanese surrender instrument. Dr. Cioffi is survived by his wife of 57 years, Helen Morse Cioffi; and children, Cristine Cioffi (John Sharkey), Lawrence Cioffi (Jan Clark Cioffi) and Antonette Cioffi (Harold Cowles). He was predeceased by grandson, Eric Clark Cioffi, and is survived by grandchildren, Sara Sharkey, Patrick Sharkey, Nicholas Cioffi, Lindsay Cioffi, Kelsey Cioffi, Avrie Cowles and Marley Cowles. He is also survived by a brother, Louis Cioffi of Niskayuna, and three sisters, Ann Cuozzo and Louise Rowe of Troy, and Antonette Macri of Albany. He was predeceased by a sister, Angela Colarusso of Troy. Dr. Cioffi was a member of the Mohawk Golf Club and Schenectady County Medical Society. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 13, 2006 at the Mohawk Golf Club, Niskayuna from 4 to 5 p.m. with a reception from 5 to 7 p.m. A memorial Mass of Christian Burial will be held Tuesday, September 12 at St. Mary's Church, Troy, N.Y. at 10 a.m. Donations in his honor may be made to the Troy Boys and Girls Club, 1700 7th Avenue, Troy, NY 12180; Ellis Hospital Foundation, 1101 Nott Street, Schenectady, NY 12308; or Hospice of the Greater Capital District, 1411 Union Street, Schenectady, NY 12308. Arrangements are by the Jones Funeral Home, Schenectady.

It is easy to complain Rodman, but 9 minutes before you made your post another unwanted one was posted. If you leave them on for any length of time they will continue to comeback. If you get rid of them as soon as possible they wont waste their time knowing it wont stay on long. Of course these post are a problem everywhere and there should be some way to turn them in. I do agree the home page could use a fresh look, to much clutter, alot like my desk, lol.

As someone who cares about this site I think some extra care has to be taken to keep it up to par. We have some unwanted guest here and they need to be removed. The Hancock reunion is getting underway at the Francis Marion Hotel at Charleston, SC today. John Finn is on the way there, with a traveling companion, and they are being escorted by Don Mettler, web master of this web site. Don said last night that John is as feisty as ever. I think it is really impressive that we have 242 people signed up for the USS Yorktown Museum tour, which will include a Memorial Service. I had to cancel attendance on account of wife Gay's medical problems.

I served aboard the Hanna' for the evacuation of Cambodia. I think I still have a patch around here that says eagle pull. I was doing a trip down memory lane for my boys and I thought of the Hancock. My boys are asking a lot of questions now that my youngest has joined the army. I was 18 at the time of the fall of Nam and Cambodia and my time on the Hancock is what I consider my maturation process. What I remember most is the nice folks (Refugees) on hanger bay #1 that took our food and water! I also will never forget the Marines and the Seabees that I exchanged hats with before they went "in country". Please take care, Mike

The officer who was my CAG when I was CO of VF-74 aboard Forrestal 1968-69 was your VF-51 CO on that cruise you made -- Robert E. Ferguson. He moved up to CAG when CDR Netherland was shot down, and went from that job to CAG-17 aboard Forrestal. I sent him an information packet about the Hancock Association. I will see him at a funeral today. Hancock fighter pilot (CO VF-24) Red Isaacks is being buried here in Corpus Christi.

This is a question to anyone who made the 1967 Cruise. I kept a diary of that cruise and found a note I had made in it on Thursday March 23, 1967. I was recently going thru some old papers belonging to my grandfather John Rickey and found a original photo with a note advising it was taken on the USS Hancock in 1966 with John Wayne standing next to Chief Warrant Officer W-4 V.A, Matt Mathiasen. Just a quick note to respond to some of the comments about medals/awards from the last cruise! I have helped dozens get their updates. There is a posting on the Hancock Website that gives sample letters to use to request the updates. YES IT DOES TAKE A LENGTHY AMOUNT OF TIME - but if you have patience - it will work. If you already have a DD-214 that documents some of your medals/awards - you need to request a DD-215 to have the others documented. The Reserve Center has a very small staff and is very backlogged - but you can help them by writing a good concise letter when you request the updates. You will also help them by attaching a copy of your current documentation. OPNAV Notice 1650 has a list of every award the U. S. S. Hancock ever received. You can search google or the U. S. Navy Homepage and locate a copy, however, it is a VERY LARGE file and many of you won't be able to download it if you are using a dial-up access. To answer Bruce's question - Yes you are entitled to two Armed Forces Expeditionary Medals and Yes you can exchange one for a Vietnam Service Medal (VSM). I would suggest anyone interested in this information review the article that the Web Tender posted for me. If you have further questions - drop me an email and I will try to answer your questions. My telephone number is also available, however, I do alot of travel in my current job so it might take awhile for me to respond - but I will get back to you when I have the opportunity. To Paul Godsil, I also sent in to have my DD214 updated well over a year ago. Last week I received a package containing a Vietnam Service Medal and a Humanitarian Service Medal. I also received an updated DD214 dated May 30, listing all of my medals and ribbons but it did not list the National Defense Medal or the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal that were listed on my original DD214. This week I received another package that contained the Vietnam Service Medal, Humanitarian Medal, National Defense Medal and the Ribbons for the Navy Unit and Meritorious Unit Awards. Another DD214 dated July 3, was sent with everything listed except for the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. It was my understanding that the Vietnam Service Medal was to replace one of the two AFEM’s that we originally received for participation in Operations Eagle Pull and Frequent Wind. At this point it is not a big deal to me but it would be nice to see them get it right. Who knows maybe another package will come tomorrow with another set of medals.

Thanks Dick, from Dennis Flynn. That is a good start on the destroyer names. I build model ships in the 1:700 and the 1:350 scale and have a diorama of the Hancock with a destroyer alongside of it but wanted to do a period set up of our ship with a Oiler , Cargo ship and the Destroyers set up like a Strike Force. Bad part is to get the oiler and cargo ship I had to go to the 1:350 scale which makes the oiler and cargo ships about 15 inches long so you can see how much space I am going to need. The Oiler is done and I put the hull # for the Hassayampa on it (the one we ran into) and have just about finished the Cargo ship. Next is a set of Sumner Class Destroyers. If you are still in contact with your class mate see if he can remember any of the other cans that ran with his during that time. Thanks for the quick start. I got a phone call from Frank Roff the other day from Washington State, He was in V-6 Div also. Do you know what ever happened to George Weston who worked the flight deck also. Dennis

I am putting together several models to form a set up showing the Hancock and their support ships during the time I was aboard. I have the USS Hassayampa AO 145 as the oiler that ran with us, but I need the names of the Destroyers that operated with during the westpack cruses for that time period. I just need the names as I can look up the class of destroyers they were. Also any cargo ships or heavy warships that might have ran with us. I also have the HMS Ark Royal and the HMS Albion As the ships we operated with in the far east. Association Founder Ed Orchowski has been in touch with the USS Yorktown Museum people. They have assured him that the Hancock exhibit will be open by the time of our reunion in August. The exhibit has been closed for the past two years or so, as they had to move it from the 02 level, CIC area, to a better location protected from leaks in the flight deck. As I understand it, the new location is second deck amidships. See you at the reunion?

Just received my Hanna news and I have to say the Testimony of David Reineman was outstanding. Those 13 stories were great reading. Was on Hanna for 2 real GQ's and at first reacted and then sat there and said 'wow. Nothing happened but I can only imagine what it was like in WW11. We do need these stories, keep talking fellows we need to pass it on. I certainly was in a different Navy then those fine men. Thank you guys.

In reference to the great letter by John L. Richards, Jr. D.D.S. Capt-DC. USNR-Ret in reference to being a reservist aboard the Hanna for his two weeks and never hearing about reservists and their duty aboard. I for one had the BEST dentist of my life do a double wisdome tooth removal aboard the Hancock, He was a full Captain and a reservist. I was very much impressed in how gentle he was. He made an unpleasant experience very good for me and Was like I said "THE BEST". After leaving the Navy in October of 62 I spent about 12 years out and then went back in the Air Force Reserves for 26 years and I know what he means about "Orphans, but look at the war years, most of the Active Force especially Officers was made up of "Reservists" who were trained and ready to go. Thank you for your service and the two weeks out of each year you spent on active duty and I for one count you as a "Shipmate"

My father, S 1/C Eugene A. Paul, from Old Town, Maine served on the USS Hancock during 1944-1945. I would be interested in communicating with anyone who remembers him. I am looking for shipmates who remember my late father, Melvin J. Leed. My father came aboard the Hancock April 10, 1944 on a temporary commission as Lt. Commander. He was assistant damage control officer until October 1945 when he was named damage control officer and first lieutenant. He left the ship in November 1946 when he was posted to U.S.S. Rochester. He reverted to his prewar rank as Chief Warrant Officer prior to his retirement in 1953.

I just went on E-Bay to see what they had for USS HANCOCK (CVA-19) Cruise Books. Although I'd love to find a copy of the Last West Pac Cruise Book (1975) (since I left the ship before they were available) - I can't imagine having to pay $399.00 from one of the "scalpers" who profit on selling these books to former sailors. I eagerly await the day when John Hunter (the keeper of our Ships Store) is able to finish the Cruise Book CD for the Last WestPac. It's great that many of the others are available (at a super cost of $15) - I hope John "steams full speed ahead" on getting this one completed. I've had many shipmates from that cruise ask when it will be done. Keep up the good work John! Hope to be able to make the reunion for at least part of the time and meet shipmates from the various eras.

Was bored tonight and and asked Goggle "Where is CVA-19?" Nice site you have here. Even saw some familiar names in the previous Quarterdeck logs. What struck me most was the photo of the boat at Cubi Pt. in Aug of 69. I was there, and only because with less than 30 days to go when we left the states my division officer wouldn't give me an early out. It turned out to be a nice pleasure cruise though. I'm making a small improvement to the Association membership rosters I'll produce in the future. I'm going to add a line with information about a person's hobbies or interests. I got the idea thinking about the golf outing that President Bernie is having at Charleston. It would be interesting to know who likes golf, or computers, or snow skiing, or bicycling, or history, or bridge, or poker, etc. etc. If you are a member, send me your hobbies. It will take a while for this project to get fully implemented, but it will make for a more interesting roster, and maybe the opportunity for more friendships fostered through the Association.

My granddad was lieutenant J.G. Ensign Roland Gehrman. He was aboard the Hancock in 1944-1945. I am just now getting interested in my granddads role in the Navy I have a book from his time on the ship the front says Air Force 7 it is about their journey and what they accomplished during WWII. Newsletter Editor Hiram got a surprise day before yesterday when he found that our newsletter printing firm is taking an extended Memorial Day holiday next week. He delivered the Hannah News to them yesterday morning, but was told they just couldn't get it prepared and mailed before they close for the holiday. They'll be back at work late next week and hope to get it in the mail June 2. Hiram's goal is to have it printed and being delivered to some recipients by the first of the month. We're going to be a little later than that with the June issue.

To: Jim Baird Re: Destroyer escorts I remember only two destroyers that were around us in '72 and they were the Higbee, whos rear gun was hit by a bomb from a Mig killing four crewmen and the Sterett, who fired a salvo of Terrior missiles and knocked both Migs from the air. Thanks to a hard drive failure by the company that I had my Hancock site on line with, my site is now off line for the time being and maybe for good. They do not know if they can recover the files. If that is the case, I may not put my site back on but there is a slim possibility. If it does I will post a message here letting you all know. What a small world we live in. Two weeks ago I was at a convention for blood donor recruiters (my job) in Ft. Worth. I was waiting for a bus to take us to a social event of the convention, when I started a conversation with a guy. We were talking, when he asked if I'd been in the service. When I told him, Navy, he mentioned he had been in the Navy. When I asked what ship, and he said Hancock, I about fell over. When he told me he was on her from '70-'72, I couldn't believe it. I have met one other person who ever served on the Hancock, and he served a couple years before I reported onboard. So, it was great meeting Marvin Hatcher, who was in Fox Division. Both of us had a lot in common: served on the Hancock; both work in the recruitment of blood donors; both went to college on the GI Bill; and both of us joined the Naval Reserve when we got off active duty, and both of us retired as 1st class petty officers! Heck, our berthing compartments were close, and we shared the same "head". I told him we were probably at adjouning sinks, shaving, and never even knew we'd meet 35 years later!

I served aboard Hancock from Aug of 64 until Dec of 67 as an RD3 in CIC. I can remember at least 3 Destroyers with which we operated. USS O'Bannon DDE 450 radio call sign "Washbowl", USS Taussig DD 746, and USS England DLG 22. The O'Bannon was my brother's ship. I had a home town(Phoenix, AZ) friend on the Taussig and I was heloed over to the England and rode her into Long Beach after the 67 WestPac cruise . I hope to see all of you at the reunion.

I have had an inquiry from a lady who thinks her Father was aboard during WWII. His name was Donald M. Bane, and she thinks he was a LCDR. In civilian life he was a lawyer, so he might have been a lawyer aboard Hanna. She asked if there was any source available which would list the crewmen aboard the ship. Dear USS Hancock Assoc., I have been told that my father, Donald M. Bane, was on the Hancock during World War II. I have a telegram to my mom dated Oct. 1, 1945 about the ship docking in San Pedro before Oct. 27, 1945. He was probably on board then. He was a Lt. Commander, I think. I don't know what his duties were in the Navy but he was a lawyer by profession. Can you tell me how I can verify this information? Was a memeber sometime ago, but got caught up in working . Glad to see the association still going strong. Have to get the membership application in the mail. I saw some notes from Tom about the Hancocks fate. I lived only 15 minutes from the San Pedro shipyards and watched as the Hanna was dismantled. I did manage to get the compartment ID plate from the crews mess. I made the last two cruises aboard her. Seeing that great fighting lady being torn apart was not a pretty sight.

I started out in E Division as a IC and then transfered to Aviation going to the V-6 Division. I was the only red stripe when we stood inspection in the Aviation Division. Wound up making ADJ3 and ran the start crew on the flight deck, Capt. Blesh did not like Marines and wanted a Navy guy for a driver and I got the job, he treated me great, driving that old 58 Chevy staff car around. Brought him back aboard passed out once or twice and with help wrapped him in a bed sheet so crew members would not see the Capt coming aboard passed out. A great guy to work with as he was always fair. Remember sleeping at sea in the cargo net that was strung under the ramp that went behind the island (boy if we had fallen through that >>>>>)Great ship, great memories !

For Howard Wilson. Sorry to report to you that Hannah was decommissioned and scrapped in 1976 at Long Beach. The bridge, pilot house, and pri fly were removed and placed in the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum in Washington DC as principal parts of the aircraft carrier display. Also, some material from Hancock was used in casting the "Lone Sailor" sculpture at the Navy Museum in DC. Join the Association.

Talked to one of our WWII shipmates yesterday -- Tom Hennessy, in upper NY State. He's making plans to go to the reunion. Aboard Hannah, he was a teen-age boatswains mate. When I became acquainted with him about ten years ago, he was fond of confronting me and stating, "In the war, we hated three things -- the Japs, the chiefs, and the officers. And you were an officer." Tom says that autos from the hurricane ravaged areas are now being reregistered in New York, and then offered for sale in other parts of New England. Dealers, when asked if the car came from the hurricane areas, state that they got the car from New York, and show the registration to prove it.

For Larry McCoy, about the March issue of the Hannah News. On Monday 3/13 I was told that the newsletter was being mailed. I haven't received my regular copy from the printer yet. Don't know why it takes so long. I'll bet some guys have received it. The editor mailed me advance copies about the time the regular copies were supposed to go in the mail. The advance copies got to me within three days. The March issue has complete information about the reunion events. You will need to register for the reunion and sign up for tours. An outfit called Armed Forces Reunions is handling the arrangements for us again. They did so well for us at San Francisco that the members voted (at the membership meeting) to use them again at Charleston.

I enjoyed the posts about the Bob Hope Show in 1968 with Ann Margaret. One of our "Willy Fudd" aircraft was parked by the hatch going into the island, so a few of us climbed up on the wing to get a good view of Bob Hope and Ann Margaret. What a wonderful memorie to see both of them.

I was an ADR3 while aboard. My favorite port was Hong Kong. In fact, I loved China so much that I now own 2 homes there. The second, I purchased recently in Beijing. I plan to retire from my civilian job soon and relocate to China. Homes are inexpensive and the cost of living is very low. Most Navy vets who retire to overseas are in Philippines, but I found a few in China. Hoope all you Hancock vets are having a good life.

MY WIFE AND I JUST RETURNED FROM VISITING THE ADMIRAL NIMITZ MUSEUM IN FREDRICKSBURG, TEXAS. IT HAS GREATLY EXPANDED SINCE MY LAST VISIT THERE IN THE 1980S. THERE IS A WALL OF HONOR ON THE GROUNDS WITH PICTURES OF SHIPS AND INDIVIDUALS THAT SERVED UNDER THE ADMIRAL IN WWII. THE HANNAH IS THERE, A NICE PICTURE AND WRITE UP ON THE WALL.MADE ME PROUD TO SEE HER AND PROUD THAT I LIKE SO MANY OTHERS BEFORE AND AFTER ME HAD SERVED ABOARD HER. I SERVED IN A DESTROYER BEFORE COMING ABOARD THE HANNAH, AND WE WOULD ALL SALUTE ADMIRAL NIMITZ AT HIS HOME IN SAN FRANCISCO BAY BOTH ENTERING AND LEAVING PORT. WE WERE TOLD IN THE 60S THAT HE WOULD WATCH THE SHIPS GETTING UNDERWAY AND RETURNING. MADE ME PROUD TO BE A TEXAN AND A SAILOR. WE ALSO WALKED INTO THE ROOM ADMIRAL NIMITZ WAS BORN IN IN 1885. On WesPac Cruise 59/60 in Mirror Gang. Typhoon of 1960 wreaked havoc on the old girl... My ankle still aches in bad weather from rogue wave that hit under mirror room, buckled the deck, sent me flying. Spent 3 days no water, little food trapped in mirror room w/2 buds. Catwalk washed away by typhoon.

For David Newcomer: just call me Tom. You'll get used to it! About Captain Ryan appearing in that TV clip. It wouldn't be unusual if a clip completely out of sequence with real time was shown. On the other hand, it wouldn't have been highly unusual if Captain Ryan had gone from Hancock to the staff in Saigon. When you receive your roster of members, which I owe you, you will be able to see where Capt Ryan lives now. I will email him (he used to have email) and copy you, and pass on your inquiry. I last talked to him on the phone during the Hancock reunion in San Francisco in May 2004. The last four Hancock COs are Association members: Johnson, Monger, Ryan, and Fellowes. Monger and Fellowes made rear admiral.

For Mr.Wimberly,[it's still difficult for me to think of the XO as anything besides Mr!]I knew that Capt. Ryan had departed in Dec.74,so I was surprised to see him in the clip. I watched the second broadcast carefully and though he only appeared briefly, it sure looked like him. Perhaps that short segment was shot elsewhere, maybe on the Blue Ridge or back in Subic Bay. Do you you know where Capt. Ryan was stationed after he left the Hancock?

For Dave Newcomer. If you saw TV pictures of the Hancock captain at the time of the evacuation of the Embassy at Saigon (1975), you saw Captain F. G. Fellowes, Jr. Captain Ryan departed in December 1974.

Just finished watching a program about the Vietnam war on the History channel, the last hour covered the evacuation of the embassy in Saigon. Of course Hancock's role was mentioned frequently, and near the end I noticed Capt. P. J. Ryan accompanying ambassador Martin. Surely some of our shipmates have some very interesting stories about that final Westpac cruise?

I concur with Larry Dewey that more needs to be published about those who served aboard Hannah in the 50s, 60s, and 70s. I guess that we should go about providing that material. (I was aboard 1970-72). How about some worthy stories to be posted on the web site, or published in the Newsletter? The doors are open. The World War II guys founded this organization, and they documented their era well in the first history book and in the museum aboard USS Yorktown in Charleston SC. They have turned over the officer positions to us; only the Treasurer and Newsletter Editor are World War II sailors. When the revised history book was published in 2004, everything that was sent in by guys from the 50s, 60s, and 70s was added to that revised edition. But yes, we deserve more publicity! Let's go about providing it to the Web site manager and to the newsletter editor! Also, Larry, you are cordially invited to join the Association and pitch in.

Good site but I think that the old girl was in a few more things than just WWll. How about a nod for some of us later shipmates. I know that the skipper of VA 212 Homer Smith got the Navy Cross in Vietnam and we lost shipmates on all of the cruises I was on!

Generally by this time in March, Association members have received their March issue of the "Hannah News." The current issue has been delayed slightly. We wanted to publish the information about the August reunion in this issue, and it took a little longer than expected to get the material ready. The final copy has been completed and delivered to the printer by our Newsletter Editor, Hiram Greer (Hull Division, 1945-46). Our printer, Alco Printing and Mailing of Atlanta, has a large order ahead of us, but expects to complete it today and then get our newsletter to press. I am expecting a request from the printer today or tomorrow for me to send them the mailing list for the March issue. I do this by E-mail, naturally, so there is no delay in the mailing list getting to the printer. The newsletter is expected to be on the way to us soon. Please don't delay in signing up for the reunion!
