JUST WATCHED EM SINK THE USS ORISKANY ON THE DISCOVERY CHANNEL. A FISHING REEF IN FLA. IS BETTER THAN THE FATE THE HANNAH SUFFERED. THE BIG O WAS IN THE RESERVE FLEET IN BEAUMONT, TEXAS FOR SEVERAL YEARS BEFORE SHE WAS SENT TO CORPUS, THEN ON TO HER END. I TRIED SEVERAL TIMES TO GO ABOARD HER WHEN SHE WAS IN BEAUMONT WHICH IS NEAR MY HOME. THE SHOW WAS WELL WORTH WATCHING AND IM SURE IT WILL BE SHOWN AGAIN.

For the guy who emailed and asked me if I knew whatever happened to "Moon Mullins" ADR2 (V6 Division) from the '65 to '68 era:

If you remember, Moon and a couple of other sailors had a car wreck while returning to San Diego from Alameda after driving up to the Bay area for the weekend while Hannah was on carrier quals before the July '68 deployment to WestPac. He suffered some head injuries and was kept in the hospital at Balboa (San Diego) when the ship left for final quals.

I don't remember if Moon rejoined the ship for the remainder of the '68-'69 cruise, but I do know that he had not rejoined the ship when I flew off the deck on the C1 for Subic Bay on September 1, 1968 for discharge processing. That day.... by the way.... was the first day "on line" in the Gulf of Tonkin.... free mail was announced at 0600 that morning which meant we were in the war zone.

When I arrived back at Alameda a couple days later... Moon (who lived in the same apartment complex in Berkeley as myself ) was not there, so I assume he was on his way back to the ship. Sorry, but I never saw him again after the car wreck. I reenlisted, got my Dream Sheet orders to Atsugi Japan and VRB cash and spent the next 48 months in paradise!!!

You could try asking Bob Stephan (member here)... he was from the AIMD Cal Lab and knew Moon.

Fair winds & smooth sailin'.... Jim Baird ATN2

For Steve Lyons. The only legitimate reason for them not being on the Wall is that the deaths occurred while the ship was not in the combat zone.

I served on the Hancock in the spring of 72. I was going through my cruise book the other day. On the page "In Memoriam" the seven airdales I was wondering if you know the circumstances of their death. I was on deck . when one of them was killed in an accident and I cant find any of the names on the wall. Does anyone remember this.

Keep up the good work, the Hannah will live on. Would be happy to hear from any of my former shipmates. I worked a lot with R Division, and they were kind enough to let my use the welding rig. Did a lot of work for Navigation, and knew a couple of the ships carpenters, if fact tucked away some where I have a desk sign made from the flight deck, as well as a piece of the old flight deck shaped like the ship with CVA 19 0n it

I came aboard The Fighting HANNA November 1963 (the day President John F. Kennedy was killed). I couldn't find my way around for awhile since the crew was on the flight deck during ceremonies. I was assigned to V-6 Ground Support and stayed there for the duration of my tour which got me out three weeks early do to Deployment for WesPac 64-65.

I said it once and I will say it one more time. The longer you leave those emails on the longer they have air time so to speak and they know it. The faster you get rid of them they will see it is a waste of time because they are not getting any time for people to see. I do it and get not even one a month. And that is not my real email address above, lol.

I think Wayne does a super job maintaining this website. The problem is, as long as it is an open forum, anyone can post whatever they want as often as they want. Also, whenever you post your e-mail address here it is immediately harvested for spam mail purposes. I finally figured out what was happening and no longer post my correct address, hence no more spam. It's a shame but a fact of cyberspace life. The only way around this is a site that requires a password. I would be in favor of that for members-only as far as posting is concerned. An open site for reading, but password protected for posting. Want to post?..then join up and pay dues and get issued a password. If anyone abuses it then bar them from posting---problem solved. Make e-mail addresses available only to members. Just some thoughts on the situation.

Shipmates who commented about clutter on our website home page. Please go check it out now and give us your comments. Personally, I think it is beautifully simple. I really like it. I visit lots of web sites, and compared to ours, most of them are truly beasts that seem to defy you to figure out where you can go, and what's on the site. To All:

About the spam that has been hitting the site, first thing I have to say is that no matter how fast you clean this garbage off of the page, it's back. The only way I knew how to keep this in check was changing the URL of the page. After an email communication with Jim Baird, his suggestion for reducing the possibility of these "bots" finding the site was too my liking and within my knowledge to implement. I will be doing this in the next week or so, I am still a working stiff and a "VOLUNTEER" for the Association and cannot work on this site full-time. I have always welcomed comments and suggestions, if you see something you don't like or would like to have changed, offer a solution. What would you like to see on the Home Page, any suggestions? I have some thoughts but the more input the better. Looking forward to hearing your good ideas.

Don Mettler

Spam Information: Don Mettler is aware of the spamming situation going on on this page and is in the process of providing a solution to the problem.

Don and I have exchanged emails and I provided him with a couple of alternative solutions to rid this message board of the "bot spammers" without resorting to requiring a pass worded entry to the Q'Deck Log which would nullify the very purpose of having this board.

There are several solutions and Don is making up his mind as to which one he chooses to use. I pointed out a couple of examples of sites using the deterrents I suggested. Jake Jaccard and Joe Stasikonis use both of these on their websites to great effect.

It is easy to complain Rodman, but 9 minutes before you made your post another unwanted one was posted. If you leave them on for any length of time they will continue to comeback. If you get rid of them as soon as possible they wont waste their time knowing it wont stay on long. Of course these post are a problem everywhere and there should be some way to turn them in. I do agree the home page could use a fresh look, to much clutter, alot like my desk, lol.

As someone who cares about this site I think some extra care has to be taken to keep it up to par. We have some unwanted guest here and they need to be removed. This site should be checked on a regular basis. And I think the home page could use a new fresher look, its to cluttered. Just someone who cares about it.

I was beginning to think that perhaps the Quarterdeck Log was inactivated for the week of the reunion.

I had attempted to log into the message board several times and got the 404 error message. Just a couple of minutes ago while I was at the Hannah website I clicked the Quarterdeck Log link in the main menu and discovered that the URL has changed!!!! I suppose that the reason was because of the mass of recent spam here... but shouldn't someone have posted the upcoming change in URL???

BTW, the other two links to the Quarterdeck Log on the Hannah main page are still not corrected to link to this message board... they still show the old URL and thus the 404 error message is displayed whenever they are clicked. Don Mettler should check into that when he returns from the reunion..

Wish I could have attended... but with the hurricane bearing down on Charleston... opted out!!!

Smooth Sailin' Hannah Crew...

The Hancock reunion is getting underway at the Francis Marion Hotel at Charleston, SC today. John Finn is on the way there, with a traveling companion, and they are being escorted by Don Mettler, web master of this web site. Don said last night that John is as feisty as ever. I think it is really impressive that we have 242 people signed up for the USS Yorktown Museum tour, which will include a Memorial Service. I had to cancel attendance on account of wife Gay's medical problems.

I served aboard the Hanna' for the evacuation of Cambodia. I think I still have a patch around here that says eagle pull. I was doing a trip down memory lane for my boys and I thought of the Hancock. My boys are asking a lot of questions now that my youngest has joined the army. I was 18 at the time of the fall of Nam and Cambodia and my time on the Hancock is what I consider my maturation process. What I remember most is the nice folks (Refugees) on hanger bay #1 that took our food and water! I also will never forget the Marines and the Seabees that I exchanged hats with before they went "in country". Please take care, Mike

Hey guys, great news from the US Court of Appeals for Veterans Affairs who issued an opinion on Wednesday August 16, 2006 regarding service connection for presumptive diseases due to Agent Orange exposure.

For a download of the Court's ruling against the VA, see www.bluewaternavy.org where you can also find a list of the diseases mostly cancers and diabetes type 2 that are preumptive for AO exposure.

If you earned the Vietnam Service Medal and suffer from one or more of the listed diseases, contact Vietnam Veterans of America, American Legion, VFW or DAV and talk to a Veterans Service Officer (VSO) about filing or reopening your claim against VA for compensation.

I filed my claim in January 2002 and have been battling the VA ever since - now the VA in under court order to pay my claim retroactive to the filing date.

I know there a lot more of us out there who are unaware of what happened to us back then, so spread the word. Some of us have actually outlived the VA claim process, but a lot more of us have already died. Family member survivors should also contact a VSO for information about benefits.

Email me if you have any questions.....

For Thomas Henman below:

Thomas.. I too remember the day CDR R.H. Netherland was shot down and presumed lost.

For many years I held a photo (polaroid shot) of CDR Netherland boarding his F-8 for that fatal flight.... he smiled and saluted me on the cockpit ladder posing for the picture since I had just ran an AN/ARC-51 UHF radio to the flight deck from the AIMD avionics shop and installed it in time for him to lead that sortie. His bushy silver crewcut hair blew in the flight deck wind as he paused to smile before putting on his helmet and strapping in.

I wrote many people who might know the address of the family so that I might send them that photo..... I finally found his widow's address in Pennsylvania and had a local veteran deliver the package to her along with a long list of condolence cards from those of us who remembered CDR Netherland and how nice a guy he was personally and what a great CAG commander he was!!

That was one of my most memorable, as well as sad days of the '67 cruise.... great loss to the VF-51 Sqn members and the Hannah ship's company guys who had the pleasure of having known him.

Great post..... maybe his family monitors this site and perhaps one of his sons will read these posts...

For Thomas Henman. We are kind of light on members who were in VF-51. But I just got a surprise. The officer who was my CAG when I was CO of VF-74 aboard Forrestal 1968-69 was your VF-51 CO on that cruise you made -- Robert E. Ferguson. He moved up to CAG when CDR Netherland was shot down, and went from that job to CAG-17 aboard Forrestal. I sent him an information packet about the Hancock Association. I will see him at a funeral today. Hancock fighter pilot (CO VF-24) Red Isaacks is being buried here in Corpus Christi.

Suggestion for the 2008 reunion. Why don't we switch to a May or June date, in order to minimize the chance that a hurricane will disrupt travel plans. Hurricanes are more likely in July, August and September. I've been worried about this one in August.

Repost: During "better economic times" I purchased a 1967 cruise book on EBay for $140. (Yes, I know it was a lot to pay but I really wanted a keepsake of my time spent onboard.) I now live on a fixed income and find that I need money for gas rather than a cruise book sitting on a shelf. I will sell the book for $100, plus a small amount for mailing. Jack..... as a further note regarding the "sinking prophecy"..........

Here is a part of my quote from that day's entry:

"Well this is the day that everyone's been waiting for to see what will happen today. Will we sink? If so I am placing this cruise log in a waterproof equipment bag and hiding it alongside my brand new life vest (Mae West) hidden in the overhead cable chase way on the 02 level just inside the aft starboard gun tub, next to my GQ position as 2JZ talker in the Repair 8 Aft Locker."

I must have taken the prediction seriously though..... LOL..... I actually did hide a brand spanking new Mae West from supply (stolen from a raft locker) since most of the life vests in the emergency life raft lockers were rotting and mildewed.... and I damned sure didn't want to end up with one of those if I had to abandon ship!!!!!!!

Happy memories....

Jim Baird ATN2

"Update: well it's now 2330 hr, so I guess we ain't gonna sink... it was a good rumor, but all for nothing. Flight ops went as usual today, nothing exceptional happened. Catching some z's before duty at 0200, firewatch on lower deck patrol.... uggg"

This is for Jack Downs:

QUOTE: This is a question to anyone who made the 1967 Cruise. I kept a diary of that cruise and found a note I had made in it on Thursday March 23, 1967. I wrote " Today we were suppose to sink, we have not sunk yet."

Jack... yep, I remember that prophecy of doom for that date (March 23,1967). I too kept a daily log (diary) of every day of the '67 cruise, and I looked up the 23rd of March and there it was...... I had forgotten about that prophecy of Hannah sinking.... LOL

OK.... here's where it came from:

It came from an article in the news regarding a vision prophecy of the same "wacky broad" that predicted Kennedy's assassination .(can't remember her name tho... wasn't noted in my cruise diary...). The rumor spread throughout the ship for about a couple of weeks before, as we know... nothing happened!!!

I'm happy to hear that I wasn't alone in keeping a daily cruise diary as a keepsake to reread many years later. I have shown my diary to my children who are now 25, 35, 38 and all of them enjoyed reading the daily routine things that occurred during that cruise.... especially the in-port dates!!!! LOL

Thanks for the reminder....

Jim Baird ATN2

For Theodore Munoz. I didn't come up with anything on Lee Morris. I remember that I did search. Joe Burns, do you have any idea how we might contact Lee Morris? Theodore, I don't remember how far I got in trying to contact James Turnbull. Tell me again where he lives, and his phone number if you have it, and I will try to call him this weekend.

This is a question to anyone who made the 1967 Cruise. I kept a diary of that cruise and found a note I had made in it on Thursday March 23, 1967. I wrote " Today we were suppose to sink, we have not sunk yet." Anyone remember anything about that and the reason I would write it down? Maybe it was just long days of flight quarters.

Don't know how Rickey came to have it. Any idea how I can get a hold of Matt to see if he wants it? Thanks in advance.

For Cheyenne Turner, re Keith C. Turner. Cheyenne, I looked in the Communications section of the 1972 cruise book and didn't find your Dad's name. There were three group pictures, with a total of 51 sailors and officers pictured, and I didn't find a Turner. Sorry. I can't put my hands on my 70-71 cruise book at the moment. When I come across it, will try to look for him.

During "better economic times" I purchased a 1967 cruise book on EBay for $140. (Yes, I know it was alot to pay but I really wanted a keepsake of my time spent onboard.) I now live on a fixed income and find that I need money for gas rather than a cruise book sitting on a shelf. I will sell the book for $100, plus a small amount for mailing. Please email me if you are interested.

Just a quick note to respond to some of the comments about medals/awards from the last cruise! I have helped dozens get their updates. There is a posting on the Hancock Website that gives sample letters to use to request the updates. YES IT DOES TAKE A LENGTHY AMOUNT OF TIME - but if you have patience - it will work. If you already have a DD-214 that documents some of your medals/awards - you need to request a DD-215 to have the others documented. The Reserve Center has a very small staff and is very backlogged - but you can help them by writing a good concise letter when you request the updates. You will also help them by attaching a copy of your current documentation. OPNAV Notice 1650 has a list of every award the U. S. S. Hancock ever received. You can search google or the U. S. Navy Homepage and locate a copy, however, it is a VERY LARGE file and many of you won't be able to download it if you are using a dial-up access. To answer Bruce's question - Yes you are entitled to two Armed Forces Expeditionary Medals and Yes you can exchange one for a Vietnam Service Medal (VSM). I would suggest anyone interested in this information review the article that the Web Tender posted for me. If you have further questions - drop me an email and I will try to answer your questions. My telephone number is also available, however, I do alot of travel in my current job so it might take awhile for me to respond - but I will get back to you when I have the opportunity. Hope this helps!

To Paul Godsil, I also sent in to have my DD214 updated well over a year ago. Last week I received a package containing a Vietnam Service Medal and a Humanitarian Service Medal. I also received an updated DD214 dated May 30, listing all of my medals and ribbons but it did not list the National Defense Medal or the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal that were listed on my original DD214. This week I received another package that contained the Vietnam Service Medal, Humanitarian Medal, National Defense Medal and the Ribbons for the Navy Unit and Meritorious Unit Awards. Another DD214 dated July 3, was sent with everything listed except for the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal. It was my understanding that the Vietnam Service Medal was to replace one of the two AFEM’s that we originally received for participation in Operations Eagle Pull and Frequent Wind. At this point it is not a big deal to me but it would be nice to see them get it right. Who knows maybe another package will come tomorrow with another set of medals.

Thanks Dick, from Dennis Flynn. That is a good start on the destroyer names. I build model ships in the 1:700 and the 1:350 scale and have a diorama of the Hancock with a destroyer alongside of it but wanted to do a period set up of our ship with a Oiler , Cargo ship and the Destroyers set up like a Strike Force. Bad part is to get the oiler and cargo ship I had to go to the 1:350 scale which makes the oiler and cargo ships about 15 inches long so you can see how much space I am going to need. The Oiler is done and I put the hull # for the Hassayampa on it (the one we ran into) and have just about finished the Cargo ship. Next is a set of Sumner Class Destroyers. If you are still in contact with your class mate see if he can remember any of the other cans that ran with his during that time. Thanks for the quick start. I got a phone call from Frank Roff the other day from Washington State, He was in V-6 Div also. Do you know what ever happened to George Weston who worked the flight deck also. Dennis

I am putting together several models to form a set up showing the Hancock and their support ships during the time I was aboard. I have the USS Hassayampa AO 145 as the oiler that ran with us, but I need the names of the Destroyers that operated with during the westpack cruses for that time period. I just need the names as I can look up the class of destroyers they were. Also any cargo ships or heavy warships that might have ran with us. I also have the HMS Ark Royal and the HMS Albion As the ships we operated with in the far east. Anyone that has a lit of these ships (the destroyers , I would appreciate any help you can give me The years were late 1959 through late 1962. Thanks shipmates for any help you can give me. Dennis

We are now down to less than 2 months until the reunion in Charleston SC. You can save $10.00 by registering BEFORE 27 July. Be sure to get your registration, and hotel registration in. Don't be left out in the cold. This will be a great reunion, as always. Great tours, BIG hospitality room, lots of sea stories to be heard, and of course, the opportunity to see your shipmates from days of old. Any questions, contact Bernie Livingston, Assn President, or Wayne Erven, President Elect. Check the reunion information on the Assn Home Page. See you there shipmates.

Association Founder Ed Orchowski has been in touch with the USS Yorktown Museum people. They have assured him that the Hancock exhibit will be open by the time of our reunion in August. The exhibit has been closed for the past two years or so, as they had to move it from the 02 level, CIC area, to a better location protected from leaks in the flight deck. As I understand it, the new location is second deck amidships. See you at the reunion?

Just received my Hanna news and I have to say the Testimony of David Reineman was outstanding. Those 13 stories were great reading. Was on Hanna for 2 real GQ's and at first reacted and then sat there and said 'wow. Nothing happened but I can only imagine what it was like in WW11. We do need these stories, keep talking fellows we need to pass it on. I certainly was in a different Navy then those fine men. Thank you guys.

In reference to the great letter by John L. Richards, Jr. D.D.S. Capt-DC. USNR-Ret in reference to being a reservist aboard the Hanna for his two weeks and never hearing about reservists and their duty aboard. I for one had the BEST dentist of my life do a double wisdome tooth removal aboard the Hancock, He was a full Captain and a reservist. I was very much impressed in how gentle he was. He made an unpleasant experience very good for me and Was like I said "THE BEST". After leaving the Navy in October of 62 I spent about 12 years out and then went back in the Air Force Reserves for 26 years and I know what he means about "Orphans, but look at the war years, most of the Active Force especially Officers was made up of "Reservists" who were trained and ready to go. Thank you for your service and the two weeks out of each year you spent on active duty and I for one count you as a "Shipmate"

My father, S 1/C Eugene A. Paul, from Old Town, Maine served on the USS Hancock during 1944-1945. I would be interested in communicating with anyone who remembers him. He was always proud of his service on the Hancock. He died on January 13, 1993. I am very proud of him and of all those who served on the Hannah. If any of you remember him, please send me an email. I am looking for shipmates who remember my late father, Melvin J. Leed. My father came aboard the Hancock April 10, 1944 on a temporary commission as Lt. Commander. He was assistant damage control officer until October 1945 when he was named damage control officer and first lieutenant. He left the ship in November 1946 when he was posted to U.S.S. Rochester. He reverted to his prewar rank as Chief Warrant Officer prior to his retirement in 1953.

I just went on E-Bay to see what they had for USS HANCOCK (CVA-19) Cruise Books. Although I'd love to find a copy of the Last West Pac Cruise Book (1975) (since I left the ship before they were available) - I can't imagine having to pay $399.00 from one of the "scalpers" who profit on selling these books to former sailors. I eagerly await the day when John Hunter (the keeper of our Ships Store) is able to finish the Cruise Book CD for the Last WestPac. It's great that many of the others are available (at a super cost of $15) - I hope John "steams full speed ahead" on getting this one completed. I've had many shipmates from that cruise ask when it will be done. Keep up the good work John! Hope to be able to make the reunion for at least part of the time and meet shipmates from the various eras.

Sarcoidosis is a lung disease associated with exposure to silica, a byproduct of non-skid deck coating, released into the air during the grinding removal process.

The Navy.VA have been aware of this health issue since at least 1999, but word is just getting out to the general public.

As part of the new funding bill, Congress is requiring (read "forcing") the Navy to provide outreach to Navy vets who may be affected.

I went through an extensive overhaul at Puget Sound Naval Shipyard in Bremerton, WA on USS CONSTELLATION in 1970-1971 and later was a civilian employee at PSNS in the 06 Maintenance Shop repairing shipyard equipment, including deck grinders.

Get in touch with your local Vietnam Veterans of America, American Legion or VFW. They all have service officers to help you deal with the VA claims process.

Craig Close, our Association Consultant for Veterans Health Issues, sent me this message. QUOTE. Anyone wanting photos of the USS Hancock CV/CVA19 can get them from google by typing in the ship's name and going to images on the search engine. Several pages will come up and one can pick the picture he wants and it can be used for the background on the desk top also. Sincerely, Craig Close UNQUOTE. I will give that a try. Most of the time I seem to have poor luck with things like that.

Was bored tonight and and asked Goggle "Where is CVA-19?" Nice site you have here. Even saw some familiar names in the previous Quarterdeck logs. What struck me most was the photo of the boat at Cubi Pt. in Aug of 69. I was there, and only because with less than 30 days to go when we left the states my division officer wouldn't give me an early out. It turned out to be a nic
