Hi to all from VF 211. I made two Westpac cruises on the Hanna 73 & 75. It has been a while since I've been on this site. Spent most of my time in the Vf-211 Line shack as a plane captain. I see an entry by James Millhouse and Kevin Canham both of whom I served with. I have also been in contact with Elmer Delgado, Jim Pruitt, and Jim Leiling. Would like to hear from other 211 shipmates.

I am checking in to see if there is any new news and also to advise everyone who is watching or paying attention to the Agent Orange issue to get on the internet and call up Senate bill S2026 by Senator Akaka. If it does not make you get involved and contact your representatives in Washington nothing will. I have already contacted by reps and recieved an answer from one of my Senators today saying that the Bill is in conference at this time. As a former Hannah shipmate I urge you to read and take action accordingly.

For Normand Goyette Jr. who posted below. The Hancock History book has a picture of the Hancock memorial plaque aboard the USS Yorktown Museum at Charleston. On the plaque are listed names of those killed in WWII and Vietnam, sorted by ship's company and air wing or squadron. In the ship's company group, Theodore J. Faleni, AMM3c, is listed. In my "TAPS" list which is published in every roster, and at the reunions, I have Norman L. Goyette, with death noted as (1990?). I have no other information about him. Normand, if you are serious about trying to get in touch with your Father's shipmates, you need to join the Association. As a new member, you will receive a roster of members. We have close to 300 members who were aboard in WWII. Also I would like to improve my records by posting a date of death with your Father's name, and also, was it Norman or Normand? If you have any questions, email me.

My father, Norman L. Goyette, aka:"Frenchie" was a plank-owner. He began as an AD (aviation machinist's mate) but was re-assigned to the Galley as a Commissaryman. He had a best friend (Teddy Fellini) who was killed on 7 April, 1945, by a kamikaze. Does anyone there remember my dad or Teddy Fellini?

To any one looking for R.C. Lewis, I also read the e-mail for his son, Trent and my e-mail came back undeliverable. I just returned today from a trip down through Tennessee. R.C. had told me that he lived in Franklin, TN. I looked him up in phone book, found his name, number was disconnected. I went to the address listed and the 4412 Murphyboro Rd and the house was vacant. If any one finds out anything else, please let me know. "Red Dog" Larson

Just returned from a fabulous weekend in Plainfield, IN where a bunch of us got together for an S-3 reunion. Nice to see guys I hadn't been in contact with for 37+ years. In attendance were myself, Steve Egan, Tom Everette, Dave Friend, Rich Grinker, Eric Heckart, Denny Howard, Gary Howard, Bill Keck, Gary Key, and Jim Lucas. Also joining us were Dallas McCreery (R Div) and Bill Hardenbaugh (GM Div). All served during the approx. period of 1966-70. Some mentioned they would like to attend the ship's reunion in San Diego next May.

Dennis Jackson said, "List of Members." Yes, Dennis, we keep a list of members. The Hancock Association publishes a quarterly newsletter, sponsors (and backs financially) the reunions every other year, and produces a roster of members. These things we do cost money. Therefore we require that only Association members can attend reunions and receive the newsletter. New members also receive a free roster of members when they join. Each newsletter tells of new members, address changes, and deaths of Hancock shipmates. All that for $20 every two years. I don't see how we do it. You are invited to join us. You may post at any time, whether you are a member or not.

For Ron Soden. I know of no roster of World War II crewmembers. I have most of the Association's personnel records, and I don't have a record of WWII members. We still have about 300 living WWII members. Post the name and date of death of the person you are inquiring about and see if anyone responds. Send it to me and I'll tell you if I have ever heard of him.

I am a state veterans benefits counselor in Kentucky and am trying to help a Navy veteran obtain Agent Orange presumptive benefits. Donnie B. Goodman was an ADR3 with VAW-3 Det 19 and was attached to USS Hancock for several deployments to Vietnam: August 1969-April 1970 and October 1970-June 1971. On several occasions he was sent in-country, he specifically recalls to DaNang, to effect aircraft repairs. We have been unable to locate any official records of those missions so we are attempting to bolster his claim with lay evidence. Do you have any contact information for aviation detachment personnel who were aboard during those time periods? Also, would you have any insight as to where records of those types of missions might be archived?

It is always a challenge to prove these types of claims and success often depends on the assistance of former shipmates. I appreciate any information you can offer.

Made two Westpacs, 1973 and 1975. Served with VF211, Ordnance Shop. After VF211 was decommissioned. (Is that right? They were back about the time I got out, I believe, with F14s.) I was sent to the Constellation as ship’s company where my shop sent me back twice on stripping parties. The first time there was still a ship’s company. The second time it was pretty much empty. Got to climb all over her. Somewhere I think I still have the sign off the door of the “Admiral’s At Sea Cabin” as a souvenir. I was on the Hornet at Alameda a couple years ago. Not exactly the same ship as the Hancock, but close enough to provide some 30+ year flashbacks. We all were young back then!

Former HANCOCK Crewmembers...please be advised that the Website titled "Navy Emporium" at http://www.navyemporium.com/ is not affiliated at all, with our USS HANCOCK Association; have no authorization to indicate that they had a "USS HANCOCK Newsletter", and our organization does not receive ANY part of their profits from any of their sales This 'Site' is simply a venue trying to sell 'Keepsakes of Military Service', and it is up to you if you wish to deal with them. I highly recommend you visit our Ship's Store link if you are interested. We have many less expensive items available.

Butch Portillo: Got your new E-mail. I like it! It will be published in the December Hannah News. The September issue is being printed this week. As to the pictures, there is no rush. When material like that is turned over to me, I generally donate it to the USS Lexington Museum here in Corpus Christi. They have a very modest Hancock display, and they are holding items that were not included in the display. For their exhibits, they want "artifacts" - things, not pictures and printed material. Perhaps there would be a better use for your material. For example, I think that Wayne Erven is attempting to get a Hancock display started aboard the Hornet Museum at Alameda. I'll ask the Association officers to comment. Also, Jake Jaccard might want to reproduce your photos.

Just stopped in to see the web site. It looks great Don! The Hannah's address has never looked better. It's summer here in So. Cal. and I drove by the beach today. The ocean always has a draw on me and I love going out on our boat on days like this. My wife, Mary, and I enjoy getting off shore a mile or two to get away from the crowds and have some peace and quiet. The time I spent on the Hancock had a profound affect on this Wisconsin farm boy. Hope you all are having a great summer!

I enjoy reading the comments from fellow Hancock sailors although I see few from personnel who served during the time I was part of the crew. Bruce Northway was aboard while was on and I see his comments occasionally. I served in Radar 51 on the forward/starboard side, just inboard from the 5 inch gun mount. Great times for an invincible 18 year old. If any of you knew me or any other guys from Fox Division during that time, I'd like to find you. 30 years is a long time but memories are fresh.

I talked on the phone to our Association living legend, John Finn. He sounded great. His 98th birthday was properly celebrated in San Diego; he thinks it was at a yacht club or similar facility on Mission Bay. He said there were a lot of people in attendance. He thinks the party was sponsored by the VFW and the American Legion.

For John Pummell. "Fightin Hannah" recieved "E" for battle efficiency, which was proudly painted on the superstructure during the 1969-1970 cruise. With Commanding officer, Captain N.P. Foss, & Captain H.B.Chambers, X.O. I can scan the letter that was sent to the Families during that time, and send anyone that is interested.

For the shipmates from the 1963-1965 era, I sadly report the following: ANA Whidbey Notes the Passing of CDR Robert (Bob) Tull, USN (Ret.) Bob Tull, longtime member of ANA Whidbey Island Squadron 40, passed away at his home on Memorial Day, 2007 at age 83. Funeral Mass was held on June 2, 2007. Beginning in WWII, Bob served 27 years as a Naval Aviator. Bob held a commercial pilot's license, a free-balloon license and was designated a heavier-than-air and lighter-than-air pilot. Aircraft types he flew included: Piper Cub, N3N-N2S, SNV, SNJ, SBM, SBD, TBM, F4U, Airship, and A3D. In addition to being an outstanding naval aviator, Bob was a real gentleman. We offer our condolences to Bob's family and friends. Cdr Tull was the Weapons Coord. from mid 1963 till I left in Jan 65 for A3 duties.

Haven't seen many posts from my old Division shipmates, in fact, only one during the time frame I served on Hannah. Hannah carried the Battle E during our WestPac cruise of 69-70. Vividly remember long 12 hour days for 30-35 days at a whack, then steaming like hell for Sasebo for 5 days of I&I. Oh, Sasebo, what memories. And who could forget Olongapo, the beautiful water (and gals of course), and our foray into Hong Kong (get your shots before going ashore) to get a pair of shark-skin tailor-made suits. I only wished our crew had voted to go Australia on our way home, vice high-tailing back to Alameda. Any takers?

Thank you all so much for your letters, stories and Kind words. I have learned so much just over the past week and it all started here. Tom

Thank you so much for that information. I just found a deployment schedule which show the cruise was from August 1, 1959 to January 18, 1960, called WestPac. I was born in San Jose Ca on Sept 1, 1959 and always knew my father was away at sea, as he was for each of his five children, so the timing fits perfectly.

I always knew that he was on the USS Independence and the USS Enterprise. He stayed over to brief one or the other and actually flew home, beating the carrier home. I remember being on TV as he was one of the first men home from that cruise, but I was not aware he was on the Hancock until recently. Thank you so much!

My father, LtCmdr Fredric Platner, served on the USS Hancock in 1959. He passed away February 7, 1980. I came across a patch that says "Far East Cruise 1959", along with a silver engraved cup from my birth that says "VA-152 1959". Can anyone tell me if the squadron VA-152 was from the Hancock? I would love to hear from anyone that served with my father or had any memories of him to share.

Although I hesitate to divulge this info, some of my old shipmates may remember me by my nickname "Cupcake" (which followed me from RD-A School) since I came aboard at age 17 and looked like I was about 15. Two cruises and 39 months hardened me up though.

Read your post Max and just wanted to comment. I will retire to Keysville, Georgia on 31 July of this year. With Richard, Hiram, you and me - we can just about start our own Hannah Detachment. I'll be retiring not only to Georgia but also to the Philippines in October or so. The plan is to do 8-9 months in our home in the Philippines and 3-4 months in our home in Georgia (I hate the rainy season). Drop me an email and maybe we can get together sometime for a cup of coffee when the fish are not biting - it would be great to share stories.

My thanks to Wayne for sending me card #100 - I would have been Life Member #1 if there had been a life program when I joined. But #100 is still pretty good. Hopefully now that we have reached this level we can increase that to 200 or 300 life members much faster. Without guys like Wayne and Tom - things would never get done. Again my thanks and keep up the good work!

I was on the USS Hancock for some nineteen months during the years 1953-1955. I was in the the Legal Department while in San Diego. After my service in the Navy, I graduated from LaGrange College, with a Bachelor's Degree. I was a banker until my retirement. I live in Cartersville, Georgia. I married Emily Clyde Paxton. She was an educator until her retirement. We have three fine children-Alison, a graduate of Auburn University, a CPA, who has three lovely children. Paxton lives in Anchorage Alaska. He graduated from Georgia Tech. He works for the government in Anchorage and is married with a son. The youngest, Matthew, is banker, a graduate of The University of Georgia. He, wife Kimberly and daughter, Madeline Grace, age six live in Clarkesville, near Helen, Georgia. I am active in the Sam Jones United Methodist Church, and clubs in my county.

My wife (of 40 years) and I will attend next year's Hannah Reunion in San Diego and will definitely persuade to tag along old buddies and their spouses from S-5 and other divisions now living in the SD, LA and SF areas. Hopefully, I will be successful this time. Incidentally, Capt. Streeper, CO of Hannah, gave me the blessings and liberty to get of the ship and marry Louella in February, 1967. The fruits of that labor gave us 2 children and 5 grandsons. Many unforgettable and happy memories on the Hannah and indeed one them was my promotion from E3 to E6 there.

For Timothy Paul, who posted below on June 14. We have your Dad, Eugene A. Paul, in our "TAPS" list which we publish in each roster (new members get a roster), and publish at the Memorial Ceremony that we have at the reunion every two years. I have his date of death listed as Jan. 13, 1993. I hope you are pleased that your Dad's name has been documented and that he is being remembered. The odd thing is, I don't know where I got the name and date. He's not in my database of members, past members, or prospective members, and he's not in the "TAPS" file I keep. Some shipmate probably told me of his death. You are eligible to be an Associate member of the Hancock Association.

For any USS Hancock vets who might be interested:

My dad (S 1/C Eugene A. Paul from Maine) sent my Mom copies of The Hanalog while he was serving on the Hancock. I've scanned the ones he sent and would make them available to anyone who would be interested in them. I have Vol 1, No. 5 (9/5/44), Vol 1, No. 8 (11/20/44), Vol 1, No. 9 (12/24/44), and Vol 2, No. 4 (6/1/45). If anyone interested in electronic copies of these publications just let me know and I'll email them along. Also if anyone in this list remembers Eugene A. Paul from Maine please let me know. I'd be interested in hearing from you. Thanks!

Hello to all shipmates; I wanted to let all of you know that I recently came into possession of a large (18x20) print of a WWII painting of the USS Hancock, created by the famous military artist and illustrator Anton Otto Fischer, LtCdr. USCG. I met a gentleman through my Dad's Destroyer Escort Assn. who had the print and when he heard I was a Hancock airman he wanted me to have it. The painting depicts a straight deck Hannah launching a small single engine fighter plane in a WWII battle setting. I am hoping to make it to the 2008 reunion and will bring the picture with me to share with everyone in San Diego!

Hello to all shipmates! At the beginning of the '72 cruise I was left at NAS Cubi Pt. as part of the beach detachment to do maintenance on one of our Fudds. We decided to send it out to the ship with a "happy face" painted on the nose (it was my idea) and with some trepidation we painted it on before the pilots arrived to take it out to the ship. Not sure the old man would approve such a thing I worried I might spend the rest of the cruise in the brig! Much to my relief a message soon arrived and the skipper said it was a big hit and wanted the other two painted the same. I soon discovered that the happy face got a lot of laughs from everyone in the ready-room when it was viewed on the recovery camera during landings. Do you remember that Tom? A little humor goes a long way, especially out at sea!

This is in reply to John Kovach. Hancock made two WestPac deployments in those years, the first from February to August 1962. Important events included covering the landing of a Marine helicopter squadron in South Vietnam (March), and operating off DaNang as a "show of force" during the communist offensive in Laos that started in May. She also covered the subsequent deployment of Marine air and ground forces to Thailand, but tension eased in July following an international conference in Geneva. The 1963 cruise was from June to December, and in November Hancock was ordered to stand-by off Saigon in case it became necessary to evacuate US nationals following the assassination of the South Vietnamese leader, Ngo Dinh Diem. In the event, no evacuation was ordered.

Just wanted to stop by and say hello to all my shipmates. Well I finally made the decision to retire from DOD 32 years of service (4 years Navy, 6 years Army and 22 years Civil Service). Figured it was the right time to watch an 8 year old grandson grow up. Plan on retiring to Philippines for 9 months and Georgia for 3 months a year (Never did like the rainy season in the PI). I've asked webmaster Don to update my information for the article on Operation Eagle Pull and Operation Frequent Wind so that those who need assistance can continue to contact me. Since Don posted the original article - I've received nearly a hundred requests for assistance. Well that's all for now - Take Care and remember all of our present and former military members this Memorial Day.

For Cheryle Neville. According to a site which claims to list all squadrons and detachments which went on the various Hancock cruises in the 50's, 60's, & 70's, VAH-9 is not listed. Detachments from VAH-4 were aboard Hancock. They were equipped at first with A3D Skywarriors; later with A-3Bs and KA-3Bs. Of course, my source is not guaranteed 100 percent accurate.

Re: May 18, 2007 Log entry by Jim Davis. Is this the AO3 Jim Davis who worked in Ordnance Control? Sorry I can't help with any information about Ron Lewis. I remember him well. It is amazing how many PANIC SITUATIONS we dealt with up there in Ordnance Control every day. Somehow they all worked out well. You probably deserve a lot of the credit for that. I would enjoy hearing from you. WO1 Burns

Duty on the Hancock was one of my best duty stations while in the Navy. Regretted getting off of her and going to shore duty in Hawaii in 69. Hawaii was not what it was cracked up to be. Have not seen but one shipmate on the roster from the communications gang while I was on board the Hannah. Have recognized several of my commanding officers such as Admiral Greer, Capt Streeper and Admiral Fellowes on another ship. I am interested in hearing from any shipmate during the period that we crossed the equator in the 1960s. I am fighting with the VA concerning veterans benefits and would like to talk to shipmates that went through the initiation at that time.

For MIKE BROWN, HENRY MCCORMICK and all you other Blue Water Navy vets...

Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA) has just introduced legislation to reopen VA Healthcare enrollment to Priority Group 8 vets who were disqualified in 2003.

Mack, I also believe vets who received the AFEM are eligible for all benefits Vietnam Service Medal recipients get.

Another note about dealing with the VA ... DO NOT deal with VA alone, get some representation from Vet groups like American Legion, VFW, etc. They have trained Veteran Service Officers who know the ins-and-outs of dealing with VA.

There are significant legal issues before the courts right now, so do not give up, keep fighting, be patient and OUTLIVE the system. My claim will be 6 years old next month and has not yt even made it out of my VA Regional Office, let alone to the VA Board of Appeals.

Visit www.bluewaternavy.org for all of the latest updates on the legal cases. I also visit vawatchdog.org for additional info every day.

Henry I read your post and am very sad about this. They don't distinguish in Iraq whether a vet was on ship or in a supply or desk job. I have prostate cancer and found that they consider me not eligible for VA care because i was on the flight deck, and offshore. Plus after 2003 if you had a job for 35 years you are not eligible for VA care. I guess working in 100 degree heat 18 hours a day 7 days a week with jets trying to blow you off the deck, and props trying to make you into steaks doesn't qualify, but if you flew through Vietnam and stepped foot on land for 1 minute you are qualified. No benefits and just go away! SAD SAD SAD!!!

Hello shipmates, members,& the ones who should be members. A couple of days ago, I visited my local va. hospital to receive some of my benefits, that is due me. I discovered some things that were of interest to me . First, I am not a Vietnam vet., I am a Vietnam era vet., although we (our pilots) dropped ordnance over there in 62,63,& 64. We received the armed forces expi. metal for 63. What is the deal here? Also I learned, one could make to much money now to receive medical benefits from the VA. We did not make a whole lot of $$$$$ , so I guess I served for GOD COUNTRY & you MOM. I though vet benefits were for vets. There is a price tag. What is the deal on this? Anyway it is hard for this old snipe to understand. Wish you all good Health. MACK

Archie Cosby said, "I am looking for someone who knows just what happened to B. Paul Tiller GM 1st class The last time i saw him he was my gun captain on quad 9 one minute he was there when we ceased firing he was gone." Archie, if you didn't find out how he was lost while you were aboard, I don't think you have much chance now. All I know is that Byron P. Tiller, GM1c is listed on the plaque aboard Yorktown at Charleston under ship's company personnel lost in WWII. If you are really serious about pursuing your question, you should join the Hancock Ass'n. and when you receive a roster, try to contact each WWII guy. We have about 330 of them remaining. The search won't be simple. I mean, various people had battle stations on gun mounts. For example, our Association founder Ed Orchowski was a baker, but his battle station was on a gun mount. Of course you are welcome to keep posting your inquiry on our site, and the other Hancock sites. If you want to learn more about the Hancock Ass'n., go to the home page and request that a sample newsletter be sent to you. That request will make its way to me, and I'll get one off to you, with membership information. Cordially, Tom Wimberly

The back cover of the 30th anniversary cover shows the Hancock's bell. The lettering faces forward. During the spring of 1966 the bell was replaced. I have a photo of myself next to the bell. The lettering faces starboard and there is a brace under the bell. The bell was outside VA-216's compartment. I saw people polishing the new bell with scouring powder in order to rub off the pebblegrain. Does anyone know why the bell was replaced? The photo was submitted by Robert M. Cieri

To Bruce Northway. How does a medical doctor be a former member of the machine shop and then be put in charge of a hydraulic gang? Think he would be in the medical field, just curious. Seems there are alot of guys getting sick, agent orange etc. How many is "alot" of guys you have talked to? I am in contact with alot and i mean alot of former vets and don't know of any that are sick from any of these causes but have been hearing about them. Again just curious about all this.

Our former shipmate, David M. Price, passed away in Phoenix AZ on 3 April 2007. Dave was a member of the Marine Detachment and was aboard the Hancock with me during the 1957 cruise. Prior to that, he served aboard the Oriskany. It was through the Quarterdeck Log that Dave and I were reunited after almost fifty years. His posting of 12 March 2005 also indicates that he was, indeed, a member of the Hancock Association. We would communicate regularly; what a wonderful sense of humor he had. I did try to express my deepest condolences to his wife, Gloria. Dave and Gloria, as well as my wife, Mary Ann and I, have been married for over fifty years. We were such babies when we first met and often shared concerns regarding mutual family responsibilities. Dave will be sorely missed by all his buddies. I will provide a mailing address for cards of condolences to Dave's family if requested at my e-mail address above. Semper Fi, Dave. Jim Hudson

I thought I would pass on this information about asbestos exposure, to all of you. I have had lung cancer surgery which was caused by asbestos in 2-1999. My advice is that each person that served aboard should get chest x-rays yearly, these x-rays should be evaluated by a b-reader or pulmonologist (lung doctor).  Adenocarcinoma & Mesotheolioma cancer are both caused by asbestos. If detected early the tumor can be removed successfully. I strongly recommend legal aid for those affected. Also one should file for compensation through the VA. I wish each one the very best. Just want to say to all of my old ship mates and to leave a message about things that are going on . I want to thank Don Mettler for all the good work on the web site this site at this time is getting to be very critical for the members of the HANNA Crew due to all of the medical problems that are surfacing due to our exposure to certain chemical agents, because of the web site I have been able to contact a lot of the old gang from the machine shop plus a lot of phone call have been coming in on several of the subjects pertaining to illnesses that the crew and there families have been suffering . There will be further notes as the information gets gathered we already have several people working together to gather information
