The USS HANCOCK ASSOCIATION is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to perpetuate the memory of "THE FIGHTING HANNAH" as well as to organize reunions of ship's company, air group members, and Marines. For renewing acquaintances, exchanging memories, and making new friends among our shipmates. If you served aboard HANCOCK at any time from the date she was commissioned (1944) to the date she was decommissioned in 1976, you are eligible to become a regular member. The Association currently holds a reunion, for its members, every two years. The first reunion held, which resulted in the formation of the Association, took place in Atlantic City in 1978. Our association was founded by Edmund Orchowski of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, a baker during Hancock's World War II service; he is still a very active member. The 1980 reunion was held in Boston, 1982 in San Diego, 1984 in Charleston, South Carolina, 1986 in Chicago, 1988 in New Orleans, 1990 in Las Vegas, 1992 in Seattle, 1994 in Virginia Beach, 1996 in Corpus Christi, 1998 in New York, San Diego in 2000, New Orleans in 2002, San Francisco in 2004, Charleston in 2006, San Diego in 2008, Washington D.C. in 2010 and will be held in Chicago in 2012. We attempt to hold our reunions in different geographical areas to equalize travel costs as much as possible. In addition, interim mini-reunions are held by various divisions and groups. See the Reunion Information page. As a member of the Hancock Association, you will be eligible not only to attend reunions but also to receive the HANNAH NEWS, our Association newsletter, which is published quarterly in March, June, September, and December. Our dues, the largest part of which goes into the publishing and mailing of our newsletter, are $20.00. The $20 covers up to two years, adjusted to make your membership end on Aug. 1. Subsequently the $20 covers a two-year period from Aug 1 to Aug. 1. Relatives and survivors of those who have served aboard HANCOCK are eligible to be Associate Members of the Association. |
