The Association Was Born...

In 1978, those who served on the Hannah gathered in Atlantic City, New Jersey, reunited for the first time, and resulted in the founding of the USS Hancock Association

Hello, this is just a note to tell all the Hancock folks how much we enjoyed seeing them in C.C. this past October and how much we look forward to the next reunion in the Catskills. My ten year old son wants to go too so he can meet the men his grandfather served with during WWII. I'm glad he is so interested. We recently went to Anacortes, Washington to visit Norman and Goodie Lorentzen and my son had a great time with their grandsons who are the same age. It was touching to know that their grandfathers, Norman and my dad Louis Burke, had flown together during the war and I wish Dad was still alive to have been with us. They are wonderful folks and we feel like they are family. Take care all. Best wishes. Lisa Sweeten

My Fighter Squadron, VF-24, was assigned to the Hancock in 1968-'69. I was a Airdale...an ATR2. This was a 9 month or so cruse to The Gulf of Tonkin. We made occational side trips to Singapore, Yokuska and Sasebo Japan, The Philippines and Hong Kong. I have a very impressive certificate hanging on my office wall as a testiment to my status as a shellback. I obtained that status when the ship went out of it's way to cross the Equator while enroute to Singapore. The initiation ceramony was one of many fond memories I have of the Fighting Hanna. I like to think that I learned alot of things while on the ship. Unfortunately, spelling wasen't one of them.

As a former shipmate 1974-31 Jan76 I am always glad to receive my copy of the Hanna News. I was the Leading Petty of 5th. Div. for two years until the decom. When I arrived on board the were 45 men in the division of Gunners Mates and we deployed to the Pacific with 35 men. During the cruise all hell broke loose and we had to change our course of action. We were originally headed to Australia and for us Shellbacks we even had a meeting on the forecastle but two days later we headed into Subic Bay ,offloaded all planes and load loaded CH46 Sea Knights, CH53 Sea Stallions, Air America Helo and 3 cobras and headed out . The rest is history. When we evacuated Saigon my job was security and as each helo landed I had to search the helos for explosives along withthe Marines. I even help push 12 helos off the ship to make room for all the people we had onb board. I was ordered directly by Capt Fellows to load ,my .45 and stand watch over the hanger deck sitting with my Div. officer to stand security watch. A real experience I will never forget. After the deployment I was given orders to the USS Kiska AE35 out of Concord. and from there until my retirement after 29 years 26 days on 31 Aug 1992 my memories will always be with me of my tour on the Hancock. I will look foward to hearing from my fellow shipmates. Thanks for coming on-line. TOM

Is there anyone our there that flew with Captain Paul Galanti in the A-4C Skyhawk in the attack squadron a float. The timeframe was around 1966 timeframe in a Vietnam rotation. Paul was shot down and held captive through 1973 when he was repatriated. Paul lost his flight jacket while on the cruise...you did not save it for him! I'm trying to recapture the jacket or replace it, since I think he probably can't fit into it any longer...leather seems to shrink after all these years! If you can ID what most pilots had on their flight jackets, e.g. Gulf of Tonkin Yacht Club, etc, i can at least begin to establish the jacket for him. How about what unit he might have been from on the Hannah? Best Ken Strafer Fairfax, Va

I served aboard the Hancock in 1967-1968. I was a Cpl in the Marine Detachment. I always called her a big PT Boat, but in 1980 (I think) I watched her being cut up in Long Beach and I cried. No ship deserves that kind of end.
