The Association Was Born...

In 1978, those who served on the Hannah gathered in Atlantic City, New Jersey, reunited for the first time, and resulted in the founding of the USS Hancock Association by "plank owner",

Comments about the web site: I just thought i would check the new entries, I hope to catch up to shipmates from both divisions that I was in.1968-70 was v-2 cats, and 1970=71 was ops/photo lab. I was hookup man ,port cat and flight deck photographer in OP Div. very tnteresting comments from others on the QD log. Any one remember the collision with the USS Cambdon in 1968? Got some good shots of the ship pulling away with our aircraft that were pulled off the elevator onto the cambdon. Hope to contact shipmates from the photo lab, but few are members. I am in full support of our military preparing to go into action. May God protect them!

Comments about the web site: I served on the Hancock in 1963 & 64. After thirteen years of Navy service and seven ships, (the Hanna was my third ship) she was the biggest and one of the most memorable. Being in First Division, my bunk was situated right under the starboard catapult. It didn't bother me much until they had night operations. I swear, the constant hammering of the catapult would vibrate me out of my bunk. The only other complaint I had was the location of the steamroom. It was right next to the door leading into our compartment and you can guess where my bunk was. Thats right. Right next to that door. If the catapult wasn't in operation, than all night long guys would be coming and going from that steam bath to the shower before hitting the sack. I now wounder if I ever did get to sleep on the Hanna. First Division was the best division I have ever been associated with. I learned a lot which I was able to use in later years in and out of the Navy. My primary job was in the sail-loft working with canvas, line and wire rope. I was also incharge of the tool grib. Being fond of good food and lots of it, I really enjoyed the long hours the galley was open. I believe the Hanna had the best cooks in the fleet and if I wasn't in the chow line, I was in the pay line. There is one event that I am trying to find some closure too. In 1964 we had left San Francisco for a West Pac cruse. The first night out we had night ops bringing the squadrens onboard. I was to stand watch on the stern but became sick. The division First Class found a seamen apprentice, who had just come aboard from boot camp a couple of months earlier to take my place on watch. It was my understanding that he was just eighteen at the time and this was his first time at sea and away from home. During that watch, a crusader came in to low and crashed on the stern of the flight deck. A section of the wing came down on the seamen and crushed both his legs. They flew him out that night to the Navy Hospital in San Diego. I don't remember the seamen's name, but after 39 years, I could never forget the incident. If anyone can remember this and the seamen's name, I would sure like to know more about him and how things turned out for him. Smooth sailing to all my shipmates.

Comments about the web site: Went onboard in Nov. 64. Two weeks later we shipped out on a piece time Wes Pac. In Feb. 65 (Ithink!) we flew the first air stike on North Vietnam. I made three tours to the South China Sea. I watched the Hancock on tv years later when it helped evacuate our personel from Saigon. This was a time I will never forget. I don't miss those days but I sure do some of the good friends I had. Later! Frank Blum, EN-2

I do not know what division/squadron or detachement he was but I do know that he worked in the boiler room. His name is George Schmidbauer but may be known as "Smitty." Also, can anyone tell me what all those letters for divisions/squadrons or detachments mean?

I can't wait to see a bunch of the old gang when the 2004 Reunion comes around. And to you guys who are looking for old shipmates also, keep looking! Comments about the web site: Glad I found this site and can join the USS Hancock Association. I will be sending out my membership application Monday. My Dad John Martin I who has recently passed away would be proud as I'am to join also. He was on the Hancock in 1944 and told me stories of his ship getting hit by kama-kazi's and him being in the water and getting picked up by a destroyer. I'am sorry all these years lapsed and he never got to join your association, but I'll do it for him now. I know he will be with me all the way and will be very pleased and proud that I have joined. My son John Martin III was also in the Navy and served on the USS Saratoga and got out just a few months before Desert Storm. I would have been in Vietnam if it wasn't for JFK enforcing married men did not have to serve due to the great loss of men in the war. Then ,married men with a child would be exempt. I hope by joining I'am able to locate some of my fathers crewmen and the pilot or photo of the plane that always came back and made it through all it's missions. My father always would be watching for (" Widdle Doc" , a plane that was named after me when I was born. His nick name was Doc, and when I was born my father asked this pilot if he would put the name Widdle Doc on the plane - and he did. Thanks for listening, see you soon John Martin II.

Comments about the web site: Just wanted to let the members know that U.S.S. Hancock patches are now available at the U.S.S. Hornet Museum website. (http://www.uss-hornet.org) I just recieved two and they are of excellent quality, measuring 5 inches wide by 4.5 inches long. They look just like the original item. After you access the Hornet website, click on Ships Store, then New Items, then Essex Class Carrier Patches. There are several ships to choose from. The Hancock patches are $8.00 each plus shipping.

Comments about the web site: Reply to Red Dog's log entry above. Welcome aboard. You are a new member. You mailed your membership application several weeks ago? The Post Office must have lost it for a while; the envelope was postmarked March 24. The way you check about friends or shipmates is to go through your roster. New members receive a roster. Your roster, with an addendum to bring it absolutely up to date, was mailed to you on April 1, along with the March issue of Hannah News. We are up to nearly 1,300 members now. From my data base, I have pulled a list of members who are, or were, in V-4 Division. Here they are: Angell, Irwin 'Irv'; Apitz, Edmund L.; Barbour, William O.; Becker, Kevin R.; Bradley, Harry; Campbell, Foster H.; Chavers, C. Dale; Conte, John Baptiste; Cruze, Robert A.; Gardner, Ulan P. died July 99; Grimm, Wm. H. 'Hans'; Hafemeister, Ernest F. "Chip"; Harmon, Joseph R.; Hartman, Dale LeRoy; Hunt, William; Jackson, Dennis; Joiner, Hayden T. 'Tom'; Jones, Charles E.; Kennaugh, Michael W.; Kleinknecht, Alan K.; Langley, William F.; Lentz, James R.; Litzinger, John E.; Livingston, Bernard E.; Mahling, Westley T."RedDog"; Milinazzo, Peter L.; Palmer, Robert J.; Pugmire, Jack; Richardson, Richard T. 'Dick'; Roske, Dennis A.; Scalese, Vincent J. Sr.; Schrieks, Raymond; Shaffer, John W.; Stuchlik, James P.; Tessar, Joseph H.; Wackerly, William A.; Watts, Thomas E ABF1 USN RET; Wheeler, James W. ABFC Ret; Wilson, Howard L.; Wooley, Donald W. 'Don'; Yeggy, Donald D. I think our Association Treasurer and 1st Vice President were aboard in V-4 when you were. Do you recognize their names above? Some deceased V-4 members may not be shown above if their widows are still Associate members of the Association. Also, you can check the end of the roster for the TAPS section and the Members Dropped section to see if names you remember are listed there. By the way - I can do lists like the above for members, but time doesn't permit me to do them for people who are not members. Welcome aboard. Glad to have you. Especially glad to have another member from the time I was aboard. Hope to see you at the San Francisco reunion; you are close by! If you have any questions, Email me. Comments about the web site: I was newly married when we departed on that far east cruise--there were places I would rather have been but I do have some very vivid and great memories of the Hanna. I have often searched for info on the Hancock and just found out recently that she had been cut up. To those who may have served in VA-216 (Black Diamonds) I would surely enjoy hearing from you. Comments about the web site: I got a moment of inspiration, at the public library, and asked the reference librarian to seek a list of US Navy warships (that are NOW museums) & a possible Hancock Association. Bingo! He found your web page and here I am! This all began because a coworker "kidded" me, this week, as to how "living conditions" where during "MY" tour in "Nam" and the youngsters currently in Iraq. This brought back "Buque Memeories"! I looked up "the boat" (yes, I am an "airdale"/"brown shoe) in Admiral Gillcrist's autobiography and the memories could not stop. NOTE: I believe that airpower/stand off weapons "should have been EXPENDED in Iraq" and the individual American service man SHOULD NEVER BE EXPOSED NEEDLESSLY to enemy fire. We had "ENOUGH OF THAT" in "Nam". I saw pilots "mount their aircraft (that is the correct "airdale" terminology, yes it's "all" comming back to me) and NEVER COME BACK. I would like to contribute "details" of TWO "balls to the wall" incidents/adventures that I "lived through" while in Hancock. The 1st. has to do with nearly being shot on the spot, by a Marine during Nuclear Weapns drill, the 2nd. was when "I" crawled under an F8, yes I "was" skinnier, pulled Sidewinders missles away from flames climbing up the #3 elevator's greasy cables, "ran for the bow" (hangar deck) with all the ordinance I could handle and "got chewed" by a "LIFER" for being late to my fire fighting station. Details upon request! Your obedient servant, Tony Blakeney p.s. my name has been "legally" changed, in court, to Protect The Innocent, "MOI"

Comments about the web site: Reply to Richard Fanning's entry. To renew your membership, Richard, please send $20 to our Treasurer, Don Yeggy, at his Iowa address shown in the newsletter. For a new roster, please send $5.00 to me at 344 Palmetto St, Corpus Christi, TX 78412. You will receive a copy of the last roster I had printed, and an update which shows all new members, all address changes, all new E-mail addresses, all deaths, etc., right up to the day I put it in the mail to you. New members receive a roster free. The five dollars we ask members to pay for any additional rosters helps cover the cost of the roster, with a little left over to help with the cost of sending a free copy of the newsletter to all prospective members (that is, former crew members) who request one. Since I developed a system to track prospective members about three years ago, I have added 639 names to the "prospective member" list. In the case of 80 of these, I had only their E-mail addresses and they received information by E-mail. The other 559 of them received a newsletter. In that same period of time, 316 joined. The largest costs involved are the reproduction costs of the roster, and the postage to mail the rosters and newsletters. Incidental costs include such things as the cost of the extra copies of the newsletter we order, envelopes, labels, etc. When all the costs are allocated, I estimate it comes to nearly four dollars for each new member we add. Charging for rosters after the first free one helps to cover these costs of having an active membership recruiting program. I don't receive many roster orders from longtime members. It also helps to keep our dues at the very low level of $20.00 for two years. You mentioned that you are a plankowner (World War II). By my count we have over 300 members who came aboard early enough that they probably are plankowners. We have 420 members who were aboard in WW II. This doesn't count our members who are widows of WW II shipmates. Maybe I should have titled this message "All you ever wanted to know about rosters, and maybe more than you wanted to know." All the best, Tom Wimberly Ass'n Pres. & Membership Chairman

Comments about the web site: Thank you, Don for making a new section for Quarterdeck Logbook entries. It will make reviewing new entries a lot quicker. Of course, if someone is reviewing entries for the first time, you have got to open the other sections so you can find possible entries from shipmates you served with. To scan for your division, open a section, go to the top of screen to Edit, click on "edit", and then click on "find" in the dropdown menu. Type in our division, i.e. V2, V-2, and the computer will find all the times V2, or V-2 appear in that section. Slick!! Of course, it is such a lot of fun reading all the neat stuff that shipmates are willing to share. You got anything to share? Are you a member yet? if no, why not? If you do become a member, you'll get an association roster, with lots, and lots of names of fellow Hancock shipmates.

Comments about the web site: Through the Association I have had contacts from many of the G Division personell who were aboard during the 68/69 and 69/70 deployments. A real great bunch of Ordnancemen. After the first line period of the 68' cruise, the Hancock crossed the equator on the way to Singapore and as the cruise book states, we had the ageless tradition of crossing the line. The evening before the crossing, a group of pollywags captured myself and another shellback chief, tied us up and took of through the bearthing compartments where other pollywags had a ball messing us up, grease, oil ,coffee on our heads, all over our khakies, they really had a lot of fun. While this was being done a number of them were taking pictures of my self and this other forlorn looking CPO. I had asked several of them for copies of some of the pictures, but they never produced any , so now I'm asking again. Sure would like to hear from any who were involved in this as I would really like to see some of the photos. Bill Kline AOC RET

Comments about the web site: For James Fenton: regarding your quarterdeck log entry of May 10, 2003. Yes, indeed, James; in the 1999 edition of the Hancock History book, we find your Uncle's name. It is in the photo of the memorial plaque which lists Hancock's dead and missing. The plaque is displayed aboard the USS Yorktown (CV-10) Museum at Charleston, S. Carolina. "Louis W. Gahran, Jr., AOM2C" is the way it is listed, and he is listed under Air Group 7. Do you know what all that means, James? I will explain it if you will E-mail me or make another entry on the web page. How would you like to have a copy of that book? The 1999 edition sold out completely, but we are about to print a revised edition. You would be able to put a photo and brief biography of your Uncle in that revised book. Because of your kin to a Hancock sailor, you are eligible for associate membership in the Hancock Association. On the web site you can request a sample copy of our newsletter. It contains information about the revised edition of the Hancock History book. Let me hear from you!

Comments about the web site: What a fantastic website!! Wayne Erven let me know about this page. Wayne, I will be joining the Association by the end of the month. First, I don't know if anyone responded to Wimberly's request (12/27/02) on our 'short'lived liberty' in Hong Kong in 1963.This was in response to some incident in Cambodia. We did not launch, just a show of the flag. I still remember the Shore Patrol going into every bar and resturant to tell us to return to the ship. Does anyone remember the "Hancock Olympics" in Sasebo? V-1 beat the Air-Wing (enlisted) in a very close softball game :) only to lose to the Air-Wing Officers in the Championship game :(. The memories of my years on the Hancock and on the Flight Deck, starting as a Blue Shirt, then a Yellow Shirt, are forever etched in my mind. Thank you for making this site available to us.

Comments about the web site: HEALTH ADVISORY re AGENT ORANGE and service on HANCOCK... If you set foot in-country RVN, rode the COD to or from Hanna while she was on Yankee Station, worked in close proximity to any aircraft/air crew that were bingoed ashore and then returned to Hanna, you may have been exposed to Agent Orange without knowing it... I just found out last year, some 30 years after leaving the Navy. The VA has established a list of diseases that are presumptive for Agent Orange exposure that includes Type 2 adult-onset Diabetes, a large number of various cancers, spina bifida in offspring, nervous system disorders, etc. If you have health problems, they may be service-related. Information and assistance is available from the VA website, VVA (Vietnam Veterans Association) website and your local Veterans Service Officer (VSO). I have done much research into this in the last 17 months, so if you need more info or have any questions, please contact me at PO Box 1586, Helena, MT 59624, by phone at 406-442-2849 or email at mtkaka@yahoo.com

I do not know the exact dates off hand but I do have his "Log Book" which contains allot of photos, and other information about the ship from his cruise. I was wondering if anyone that knew him might see this note. His name was Leroy Everett Spetter, and he was a large man. He was 6'5" tall and is pictured in his photos wearing a set of Rayban style dark sunglasses. IF you knew him and can give me any stories or infor about his tour in the Navy please cantact my email.

Comments about the web site: Response to logbook entry by B. J. Shenk Nice to see your entry on the Hancock Association web site. An excellent account of what Hannah did in World War II will be included in the revised Hancock history book we are working on publishing. As kin of a Hancock sailor you can join the association as an associate member. This will get you a roster and you could write or phone the nearly 500 men in our organization who were aboard in WWII. Do you have any hint of what kind of work your Father did when he was aboard Hancock? If you have his address on a letter he sent home, it would probably contain important information. How long did he serve? Do you have any of his papers? I suggest you log onto the web site again and request a sample copy of the Hannah News. You could submit a photo and bio of your Father to be included in the book we are publishing. That would make it worth buying to you, but it is not necessary that you buy it. Let me hear from you. Comments about the web site: Thanks Tom, I will keep that in mind. This is a great website. I just heard about it last night after making an entry into classmates.com's military site. I have spent some time going through the log and found a few guys I served with. I have enjoyed everyone's stories and have many memories myself. I was on the last cruise in 75. We were loaded down with a Marine helicopter airwing that we picked up at Pearl Habour after offloading our fighter airwing. When we got to Subic it was about midnight, so when I woke up the next morning, I went out on deck to see a battlion of Marine infantry on the pier waiting to come aboard. Those poor guys spent the next few weeks sleeping in hanger bay #3. When we picked up refugees they were all crammed into hanger bays 1 and 2 and anyplace else they could find. I was standing in hanger bay 2 watching all the activity when the flight deck started pushing helicopters overboard. The first startled me but when the next one went over I realized they were out of room on the fight deck. I will keep an eye out on the log and hopefully attend the reunion in 2004. Thanks Tom Davenport (aka D.P.)

Comments about the web site: Response to Curtis Jacobsen's log entry. I keep the Association's primary data base, Curtis, and it is used to generate the mailing list for the quarterly newsletter. Let me know who you are looking for, and I will be glad to check the data base for you. I will respond to that and similar requests from members as long as I have time to do so (and so far I have not been overloaded in that regard). I don't provide that kind of service for non-members, except in a few cases of people who had a relative serve or die while aboard Hannah. As to on-line access to the database of members, I feel that it might work to the disadvantage of the Association. Here's my rationale. Without an association and funds, there would be no reunions, no newsletter, and no web site except individually owned ones. The association survives because of membership dues. For their dues, members get the newsletter, the organized reunions, the web site dedicated to the Association, and I am provided funding to mail sample newsletters to prospective members at no charge to them. Also, new members receive a free roster of members when they join. We charge $5 for replacement rosters after the first free one. Two of the main benefits of membership are the newsletter and the roster. To receive the newsletter and receive one free roster, and be able to order updated rosters, a man has to be a dues payer. Technically, it is possible to put the newsletter on a web site, and it's possible to have the roster of members available on line. But if we give those two things away, it reduces the incentive to join the Association. At this point, I don't think it would be wise to make those two technical "improvements." It is also relevant that the Association's dues are very low -- only $20 for two years. By the way, I am glad to get your E-mail address. I didn't know you had one. I don't know how long you have been a member, but I know you were in that first list of 1,160 members that I received when I took over membership records in 1998. The Association appreciates your support. Let me hear from you.

Comments about the web site: The last entry I made was February 20th, so I thought it was about time I let you know I was still alive. When I first went aboard the Hanna, a friend of mine was already stationed aboard. Upon arriving, the first thing he told me was that there was three groups of people aboard. There was the black group, the northern group, and the southern group of sailors and with that he added, none of them intermix. I was down on the foc'sal one day and there was alot of southern boys sitting around talking. I was'nt so sure that my friend was correct about his observation of fellow shipmates so I stood off to the side listing when they started to have a hog calling contest. Now, hogs, that was the one thing I knew alot about. I grew up on a hog ranch with an average of 60,000 hog's and we shipped 400 hog's to market every week. Without knowing to much about me, they envited me to join in. My first try impressed them so much that they wanted to know where I was from. With my best southern drawl I said I was from the South. They let it drop at that. After the second round, they where even more impressed and asked me again where I was from and again I answered from the South. They whern't satisfied this time with my short reply and demanded to know just what part of the south I hail from. I calmly replyed in the best southern accent I could, "South Tacoma". It took a few minutes before someone said," just what part of the South is South Tacoma located in. Sitting there, I looked straight back at him and replyed, (in my best southern accent) South West Washington State. It slowly started out as a chuckle untill everyone around was caught up in the hummer of it and was laughing. From that day on I was always welcomed into the ranks of the southern boy,s I am proud to say that on the Hanna I never found any group that a person could not be associated with regardless of the color of their skin,or religion. I always lived by my father's philosiphy on life and one that I have tried to teach my kids. Never look down on anyone for the day will come that you will have to look up to them. Here is wishing you all smooth sailing until next time.

Comments about the web site: Comments in response to Thomas M. Jacobs's message above. I really enjoyed your story, Tom. It made me want to tell something about my time aboard. My tour as XO was during a time that was particularly nasty around Alameda and Berkeley. There was so much anti-Vietnam-war sentiment. I can remember a few occasions of driving to the ship with windows rolled up through hostile crowds and wondering if I would get through the gate safely. Shortly before I reported to the ship, a group of very junior ship's company officers wrote a letter to the captain expressing their opposition to the war. Would you believe that most of these officers went right on and performed superbly on the next Vietnam cruise? Several of them were on bridge watch teams and one of them was an OOD entrusted with the ship on his watch. Only one of them had so little self respect that he conducted himself as an absolutely useless bum. We had to get rid of him. During my tour, not a single enlisted man came to my official attention as being a problem because of his political views. We had the same sort of diversity among the crew that Tom referred to, and some groups had strong sentiments. I met with many of them on several occasions. Mainly, I listened. I know that there were some hostile feelings between the groups, but it didn't reach the boiling point as it did on some carriers. I know that many men were against the war, and would rather have been at home. But they worked their tails off at their respective jobs. Why? I have concluded in later years that the main reason was their loyalty to their buddies - their small group loyalties. Whatever the reason, they contributed to the outstanding reputation which Hancock had among the shore establishment and the senior staff officers on the West Coast and in West Pac. The reputation was upheld even after the bad publicity regarding the junior officers' protest. The ship was an operator and a worker! Everybody turned to and got the job done. While I was there, the ship had two great captains. The two air wing commanders were superb leaders, and all the squadron and det CO's were competent combat leaders. That air wing was always ready and never let us down. They flew in the worst weather I had ever seen a wing fly in, and I had been on numerous cruises, east and west coast. Everybody on board worked and everything got done - the engineers, the deck hands, the communicators, the aircraft maintainers, the supply guys, the paper pushers, the ordnance handlers, the navigators, the medical people, the flight deck people, the weapons planners, the compartment cleaners, the mess cooks. I was proud to walk around the ship. The spaces were not as freshly painted and and sometimes not as clean as I had seen on my other ships, but hell, man, we were conducting combat operations and getting the job done! Let's keep our priorities straight! My time aboard HANCOCK was the toughest job I had, and the most physically demanding. I am very, very proud of that experience. I am proud to have been a HANCOCK sailor. I treasure the memories, and I treasure the friends I have made through the USS HANCOCK Association.

Comments about the web site: Since my last entry was made on February 20th, it might be about time you heard from me again. In 1963, I was stationed aboard the U.S.S. Jupiter, home ported in Yokosuka, Japan. A friend of mine stationed on the Hanna had arranged a swap of duty station for me with another seaman who wanted to stay in Japan. When the Hancock pulled into Yokosuka, I looked up at the biggest ship I had ever seen. As I went aboard and turned my orders in at the quarter deck my friend met me and showed me around. One of the first things he told me was that there where three different groups of sailors on-board. There was the southern group, the northern group and the black group and they segregated themselves from each other most of the time. One day a bunch of the southern sailors where gathered on the foc’sle talking about home. I stood off to the side, trying not to be too noticeable, just listing. The conversation got around to who was the best hog caller and each of them took their turn at bellowing out their own version. When they noticed me standing to the side they invited me to try my own talents at this art. Now, hogs where something I knew a lot about. I grew up on a ranch where we raised 60,000 head of hogs and shipped 800 to market each week, six months out of the year. After sounding my repertoire in the art of hog calling, my now new friends where astounded at my ability. They asked where I was from and in my best southern drawl replied, "I's from the south” and let it drop at that. After the second round of call’s, they where again impressed and asked, “just what part of the south are you from”. Again I answered that I was from the south without any further elaboration. They weren’t going to let me get away with it the second time and started pressing me for more information about home and how I knew so much about hogs. Some where trying to guess, placing me in Georgia or Tennessee. I finally broke down and said, “I’s from south Tacoma”. They just sat there looking at me for the longest time before one of them finally said, “just what part of the south is south Tacoma in”. With a grin on my face that stretched from ear to ear, I smiled back at them and said, ”southwest Washington” and added a moment later “state”. It took a few minutes to sink in but eventually they figured it out and everyone had a good laugh over it. In the year and a half I served on the Hannah, I never had any problems with any groups or individuals (including the Marines) and in the worst conditions as will as the best enjoyed my duty aboard the great gray lady. Until next time, I wish all my shipmates smooth sailing.

He served on USS Independence and USS Hancock. Here in Boise Idaho our Capital City Post #63 is preparing a Patriots Walk in Veterans Memorial Park and I am trying to gather the necessary information on my husbands service for stamping on a brick for the path. Forgive me as all this paperwork is confusing, as he was active twice. I need help figuring out his last rank. I see MM2 and MM3 both listed. Which would have been his highest rank? Thanking you in advance. Sherrill Clark

Comments about the web site: Very sorry to hear of Harold's passing. I had corresponded with him. In my records I show that I sent Harold a sample copy of the Hannah News last July. I didn't hear anything else from him. From your mention of MM2 and MM3, Harold's highest rank would have been MM2, or Machinist Mate 2nd Class. Harold was a Petty Officer 2nd Class. The Petty Officer rank starts at 3rd Class and moves up to 2nd Class, then 1st class, then Chief, then Senior Chief, and at the top of the petty officer ranks, Master Chief. Petty officers are split into ratings, equivalent to a job specialty. Some of the ratings are Gunner's Mate, Boatswain, Dental Technician, Signalman, Quartermaster, Photographer, Aviation Ordnanceman, Yeoman, Disbursing Clerk, and in the case of Harold, Machinist Mate. There are a great many others. If you would please give me the date of Harold's death, I would like to place it in my list of deceased shipmates. I would appreciate it. New subject: Do you know about our history book that we are about to publish? It will contain ship's history and also photographs and biographies of former crewmen. You could make a listing for your deceased husband and it would be published in the book. Let me know if you are interested, and I'll give you more information. Tom Wimberly, USS Hancock Association President

Comments about the web site: I apologize for the double entry of my story. When I initially wrote the story I thought I had erased it. The next day I re-wrote the story and submitted it. It surprised me when starting at the bottom of the entries, Tom Wimberly made a comment about it. I will try my best in the future not to duplicate anything.

Comments about the web site: Reply to Lowell Price's posting, in which he refers to Hancock class carriers. Lowell, I have never heard mention of a "Hancock class." That doesn't mean there is no such thing, because I am not familiar with all the names and numbers of the modifications made to carriers like Hancock. But if we go back to the early 1950's, I am on firm ground, and can tell you this: Hancock was of a class that was called the "Essex" class. I memorized their names and hull numbers a long time ago. If I still remember correctly, here they are, listed by hull number: 9 Essex, 10 Yorktown, 11 Intrepid, 12 Hornet, 13 Franklin, 14 Ticonderoga, 15 Randolph, 16 Lexington, 17 Bunker Hill, 18 Wasp, 19 Hancock, 20 Bennington, 21 Boxer, 31 Bon Homme Richard, 32 Leyte, 33 Kearsarge, 34 Oriskany, 36 Antietam, 37 Princeton, 38 Shangri-La, 39 Lake Champlain, 40 Tarawa, 45 Valley Forge, 47 Philippine Sea. That's 24 that were built as Essex class carriers. I don't know when the mods started, but I reported aboard Kearsarge in April 1952 as a new Ensign as she was coming out of the yard at Bremerton. Her hull had been widened two feet on each side (I believe it was mainly for more fuel capacity - jets were coming), and her weapons spaces had been upgraded to accomodate nuclear weapons. The four twin 5-inch 38 calibre gun mounts had been removed from the flight deck. She still had 8, I believe, 5-inch 38 single mounts, in gun tubs below the cat walks port and starboard forward and port and starboard aft. She also had some 3-inch 50 calibre twin mounts in the bow gun tubs and I believe in fantail gun tubs. She did not have a hurricane bow. Displacement was considerably higher than the 27, 000 tons of the original Essex carriers, and she was no longer able to transit the Panama Canal because of the additional four feet in the beam. In the 50's, many of these ships received considerable modifications, including steam catapults, hurricane bow, and angled flight decks. I believe when Hancock had received all these mods, she was what we referred to as a "twenty-seven charlie" class carrier. I don't know how many of the Essex class received the 27C mods. I served aboard six Essex class carriers, starting in 1952 with Kearsarge, then Bon Homme Richard, Intrepid, Lexington, Shangri-La, and finally Hancock in 1970-72. I was ship's company in Kearsarge, Intrepid, and Hancock. I was air wing in Kearsarge, Bon Homme Richard, Lexington, and Shangri-La. I made seven deployments to West Pac or the Med in these ships. A few years ago, when Don Mettler and John Hunter came down here for an extensive tour of Lexington (now a museum ship here in Corpus Christi), Don asked me if Lexington was a "long hull" or a "short hull." I didn't know what he was talking about. In all my time on Essex boats, I had never heard the term (having served in CIC, Engineering, Gunnery, Air Wing, and as XO). Maybe I am just likewise ignorant of what the "Hancock" class was. I'm sure it can be researched and looked up. Best regards.

Comments about the web site: More on Essex/Ticonderoga/Hancock class carriers. I'm learning stuff all the time. Now I find there is published material which says Hancock was a Ticonderoga class carrier. (I guess maybe the material doesn't dispute that Ticonderoga class was a sub category of Essex class carriers.) All I can say is that in boot camp schooling, in OCS, serving in Kearsarge, Bon Homme Richard in the 50's, in General Line School in 1958, and serving in Intrepid, Independence, Lexington, Shangri-La, Forrestal, and Hancock in the 1960's and 1970's, I never heard the ships like Hancock referred to as Ticonderoga class carriers. Never. They were always called Essex class carriers. Now the researchers have apparently come up with the straight dope. More power to them. But around Alameda, San Diego, Mayport and Norfolk in the 50's, 60's and 70's, if you had mentioned Ticonderoga class, the people manning those ships would not have known what you were talking about.

Comments about the web site: In response to Lowell Price's posting. There is more information on the following on the Ticonderoga Class Carrier. Cut & paste this url into your browser address: http://www.history.navy.mil/photos/usnshtp/cv/cv14cl.htm Beginning in March 1943, one visually very significant change was authorized for ships then in the early stages of construction. This involved reshaping the bow into a rather elegant "clipper" form to provide deck space for two 40mm quadruple gun mountings, thus greatly improving forward air defenses. Thirteen ships were completed to this "long-hull", or Ticonderoga, class. Four of these were finished in 1944, in time to join their Essex class near-sisters in Pacific combat operations. The rest went into commission between early 1945 and late 1946. Hope this helps clear up the issue for you. Let us know if you need any further assistance. Don

Comments about the web site: I was just reading the entries on the differnet class of carriers that hanna might have been. It brought back a memory we in W division experienced. We were envolved in chipping paint off the bulkheads of the voids directly be low our aft weapons storage area. These had us actually down to the keel. While chipping and sanding the area for painting it was discovered that keel had a name weld beaded in it. After getting all sand down an cleaned, the name Ticondaroga ( if I have misspelled the name please forgive me, ) appeared. We did some research and found out that the ships had there names changed so that Hancock would be the first out of the yards and in the fleet. I believe the this happened around May 1943.

Comments about the web site: Tom: Thanks for your input on the Hancock Class of Carriers. I purchased a Blue Jackets Manual from E-bay. I think it was published in early 1960's. It named three class of carriers and one was the Hancock. I had never heard of this class of carrier either. I had read about the long hull Essix class carriers before, but never read about the Hancock Class. If any of you are interested in the publication date, I will look it up at home. Lowell

Comments about the web site: I finished NFO training in February, 1965. There were too many of us before things really got rolling in Viet Nam, so they farmed us out to ships in the fleet until they had billets for us in a squadron. I ended up on the Hancock for about a year before moving off to VAW 111 and was glad that I got a taste of the "real Navy" before heading off to the aviation side of the house. I ended up in the reserves for 20 years and shifted back to a surface billet for most of that time.

I remember going to GQ and staying there for hours, when we launched the first strikes into north vietnam. watched migs in the air on radar, and them turn back when we launched our cap. remember losing a man overboard and one of the DD's finding him about 8 hours later, during the search. Remember some of the friends, places, and things. It was a while ago

Comments about the web site: Went aboard ship in 1960 as "W" Division NCO and was later joined and shared the Division with Bobby Owens who I had been stationed with prior at Lake Mead base Las Vegas (Tough Duty) of course down the line we were both bumped by a higher ranking NCO as we were NW1's at the time and that designation was changed to Gunnersmate Technician as being a Nucspook just wasn't in. I think in 1960 we "W" Division was the first to deploy as permanent ship's company as Nucspook's prior came aboard like the air crews did and then would leave after a cruise. Met a lot of great people and swapped a lot of sea stories and how I remember the calls out of Hong Kong for the Vietnam evacuation support before my time aboard the Hanna was completed. I had invisioned some fine shore duty when my time was up on the ship but was transfered to the Alameda Underwater Weapon's shop and didn't even move out of the quarters my family and I shared. Of course that shop later moved to the new one built at Moffett Field as that is where the aircraft were stationed. When my enlistment was up and so was my shore duty I took a discharge and a couple months later joined the Air Force with rate for rate and choice of duty for two years. Ended up in Klamath Falls Oregon at a municiple ADC outfit, to Cigli AB, Turkey and then Ramstein Germany and all those assignments my family was with me. Left Germany in the later part of 1971 for Chanute AB Illinois for Retirement Processing and they sent me home until the last day of Feb 1972 when I retired. Now here I sit at 70 and wish at times that just one more cruise at sea could be made. But guess us old Salts (Yes My heart has always been with the Navy) shall leave future cruises to the youngsters who have and will follow us.

Comments about the web site: WOW! I guess there aren't many BT's who can type? What a ship. I went aboard the Yorktown last year, and man, it was like stepping back in time to my youth. I was remembering outloud with my friends on the deckplates in 2 Fireroom, turned around and was surprised to see a tour group of about 15 people listening to my Hancock sea (horror) stories. I don't have many fond memories of the old girl, but I'm proud of my service aboard her. I finally retired in 1996. I miss the Navy but I don't miss Hanna. We wuz a crazy bunch.

Comments about the web site: Today's date is one I'll never forget. July 29, 1967 was the date of the Forrestal fire. When it started, I was in a VF-74 F-4B turning up on the flight deck. I was to lead a 10-plane strike on some hapless and insignificant stream crossing in North Vietnam. VF-74 lost 42 men from our night crew. They were asleep in the portside living compartment just under the after end of the flight deck. Many in the compartment escaped; they were the first ones to get up and get moving instantly when the general alarm sounded. The VF-11 night crew occupied the living compartment on the starboard side adjacent to ours. They lost 47 (or was it 49) men. Starting about one minute 20 seconds after the fire started, the old WWII type bombs on the A-4s and A-6s at the after end of the flight deck started cooking off. They detonated high order, as if they had been properly fuzed. The 4-inch thick steel flight deck was penetrated in numerous locations. These explosions and penetrations into the VF-74 and VF-11 berthing compartments resulted in the heavy casualties in those squadrons. One of the TV programs which you may have seen represented itself as the story of the Forrestal fire. The film was later found to have come from a Navy training production which included film from the Enterprise flight deck fire. I was glad to learn this, because it explained why, in one of the pan shots of the port side of the flight deck, my F-4 which was parked portside abeam the aft end of the island, was not shown. I conclude that pan was from Enterprise, not Forrestal. The Enterprise fire vets claim to have recognized right away that some of the film was from the Enterprise fire. They also claimed that they had a hard time getting the Navy to acknowledge that fact. One of them gave me correspondence relating to the controversy. The book by Freeman on the Forrestal fire is not well done. It was criticized by qualified reviewers. I have not finished it, because it tells very little about some of the things I think are important, namely the air wing casualties and the role played by the air wing in fighting the fire. There is an excellent account of the Oriskany fire, if you are interested. It is "Fire on the Hangar Deck," written by retired Naval Aviator Captain Wynn Foster. All the best, Tom

Comments about the web site: Would love to hear from friends & former shipmates I served with. After leaving the Hancock in 1974, I lived in Alameda and then moved to Hayward, where I've been for the past 20 years. NAS Alameda closed down many years ago and the base has been open for quite a while. It's great to drive around and recall what it used to be 30 years ago when we had all those carriers stationed there. They just tore down all the housing along Atlantic Avenue (the street leading to the base) and I believe they are going to build several hundred new homes. A lot of businesses are now occupying the hangars, as are a number of movie studios. They filmed parts of The Matrix Reloaded there. I haven't been to any of the reunuions, but I think that this next one will be great because it's location is something like 23 miles from the base and I am most certain a lot of people will want to visit the area.

Comments about the web site: I was a member of the flags band. I have some great memories of ship board life on the Hanna. Colliding with the USS Camden. Finding out that Admiral Morrison was James Morrison ( from "the doors") dad. Wow that was an experience in learning that information from the Admiral himself...I think there was some "disfunction" in the family. Thanks for putting this site together....Then Hanna was a part of my life I shall remember forever....

Comments about the web site: Was a RM3 in 1962 stationed on the USS Ranger CVA61. The Ranger had just completed a WestPac tour and I wanted to stay in WestPac, especially in Japan. I put in for relief carrier, the Hancock was the relief carrier for the Ranger. We were in Yokosuka, Japan and the Hancock pulled in and tied up across the pier from us. My request was approved by Epdopac and I packed my seabag and carried it across the pier to the Hancock. I stayed on the Hancock until 1964 when I was transferred to Navcommsta Philippines. While on the Hancock, in and out of Japan I married a Japanese national , still married, 2 grown sons. I retired from the Navy in 1977 after twenty years as a RMC. My memory of my time on the Hancock is fading with time for names, I do remember a sailor, by the name of Hancock getting into a fight onboard and was killed. A Chief RM by the unlikely name of Clingingsmith. He transferred me to the Master at Arms division because he didnt like me. I remember a black sailor overdosing on drugs onboard in his bunk, they put a picture of his corpse lying in his buck on the bulliten board with a warning that this is what happens when you take drugs. Loved to sit the CW circuit, NWLD was the call sign. Got my CW speed key certificate in Yokosuka from the Commsta, still have the picture of the Hancock Comm Officer giving it to me. Other black RM in the picture who got his also, think his name was Ivory. Maybe some names will come to me later. Jim

Comments about the web site: Notice to shipmates making entries on the web site. We have a glitch on the site. Sometimes when you make an entry, you get a response which says, "Web page cannot be found" or something like that. Most of the time that message is in error. If you get it, just click on refresh (that's F5 with AOL) and wait til the page reloads. Most of the time you will find that your entry has been recorded, despite the message to the contrary. This glitch is why you see the same message repeated several times on the site. When the shipmates get the "Page not found" etc. they are sending their entry again and again. So far we have not been able to fix this problem.

Comments about the web site: Reply to Willard Parker - "propman1" - Hancock received the angled deck modification in the mid 1950's at the time most of our Essex class carriers were being converted. I have never heard of any note being taken of her as one of the first angled deck carriers. She is well known for a "first" in another category - about 1954 she was the first carrier outfitted with steam catapults. She received this mod before she received the angled deck. I made a landing aboard when she still had a straight deck, but had steam catapults. (See my story in the stories section of this web site.)

Comments about the web site: I boarded Hannah in April 1960, in the Philippine Islands. I spent many 6 month cruises during my stay from 60-64. My division was the electrical division, worked everywhere, keeping the generators running, repaired lighting systems, dodged planes when the deck lights needed repair. I remember one night, I was asleep on a steel bench in the lighting office, just below the flight deck, when an F8, piloted by a jarhead pilot, hit the back of the ship, and set her on fire. When I left, they were just starting the Viet Nam campaign. Our planes were flying sorties over off the coast of Nam in 1963! I have many fine photos of the ship during flight ops, if you could use them in your website. rw - 9/1/03. I currently live in Manteca, California, and sell real estate. I have 5 children and 6 grandchildren.

Comments about the web site: Korean War Era Vets, the Post Office has issued a stamp for you guys. It is the "Korean War Veterans Memorial". Be sure to get some of these. Also, there is a Purple Heart Stamp for sale now. Time to honor both our Korean War Vets, and the guys who paid in blood in all of our "conflicts". Be sure to check the September issue of the Hahhah News. Has a lot of information on the 2004 Reunion in the San Francisco Bay Area May 19-23 2004. For any info, feel free to contact me, call me, or write me. See everyone in Branson in a couple of weeks. Everything listed on the reunion page.

Comments about the web site: My son is in the Navy Sea Cadets, they were performing a flag burning ceremony in our local park. I met a gentleman there I talked with who lived a block or so from me who was stationed on the Hancock. He told me several stories and also the kamakazee hit on his birthday. He lives in Keller Texas. Would anyone know who I am talking about? I would love to contact him again.

Comments about the web site: For Eric, who made an entry on the site on September 5. BINGO Eric! I just talked on the phone to a man who thinks he is the one you talked to. He is Donald E. Schmidt, and he says he would be glad to talk to you. He was aboard Hannah when the Kamikaze hit, and often wears a Hancock shirt and cap which shows "Kamikaze survivor." He is in the phone book, so I will let you look up his phone and address. If you have any trouble getting in touch with him, let me know.

Comments about the web site: My Daddy was stationed here I am not sure of the years anymore, close as I can estimate it was around '71-'74?? My dad is Bobby Joe Brummett...anyone know him? I forget what rank he was at the time and what he did - chief petty officer comes to mind but that could have been later in his career... I remember the Hancock very fondly! I was so proud of my Daddy and the ship he worked on. There was a family day for some kind of anniversary and we got to take a cruise. It was the highlight of my life going under the Golden Gate and thinking we were going to hit the bridge! lol... and those planes were LOUD whenyou are down below.... This site is wonderful and even though I was not one of you guys and really have no idea of all you went through, I still feel like family. I wish I could remember names of the men who came to visit us and some who even stayed with us.... Thanksgiving dinners, the works.... THANKS so much for bringing back so many happy memories - those were some of the best years of my life - only I did not know it then. God Bless you each and everyone.... If anyone remembers my Dad or my family - Please email me. I would love to chat.

Comments about the web site: Just finished the mini-reunion in Branson MO. It was great! We did it in conjunction with the Medal of Honor Society. There were about 75 Medal of Honor Recipients there. Talked with a lot of them. What an honor. Hope all of you can come to the 2004 reunion in Millbrae CA, at the Westin Hotel, Right next to the San Francisco airport. Contact me for any details not on the reunion page. Wayne Erven, 2004 Reunion Coordinator

Comments about the web site: I will be sending my membership application soon. I saw an entry in this log where a guy asked if anyone remembered the collision with the Camden. That day is burned into my memory. I remember some of our jets upside down and burning on the Camden with all those 500 pound bombs in pallets sitting on the deck. Who could forget??
