Would like to hear from any one who may have known my uncles Kenneth T. (K.T.) Moore and William S. (W.S.) Moore. Both served aboard the Hancock in '44 and '45. Uncle W.S. was killed in the bomb explosion of Jan. 21, 1945. Uncle K.T. left the ship shortly thereafter. Uncle K.T. now lives in Yoakum, Texas.

After my first post, scrolled down to see if anybody I knew, found a few. I wonder how many people in the same time frame also came off the USS Oriskany after ship went to dry-dock to be modernized. I spent my first year of sea duty on her. When I reported aboard the Hancock, I am sure her skipper was Capt. Black. I was his orderly and also orderly for Capt. Oden'hahl for a very short while. Made Cpl. in 5/57 and that was the end of me being an orderly. Being aboard ship was one of the most interesting times of my 4 years in the Marines. Was sorry to hear that Capt. D.R. Jones (Lt.Col.) and Capt. Oden'hahl had passed away. Great site.

I did WPac twice and saw places few people ever have a chance to see. From Hawaii to Yokosuka to Sasebo to Hong Kong to Subic Bay. We were scheduled to go to Sydney but some damn College students decided to take over one of our ships on a lark and did so much to the suprise of our security, so we didn't get to go there. They got all the way to the bridge without being challenged. We were involved in the Formosa (now Tiawan) incident with China but were recalled before we could get there because the attack ceased. I was released in Yokosuka and ended up returning to the States on the "USS MT. Katmai" ammo ship in rough seas all the way home. It was like going from a Luxury Liner to a Row Boat. Memories for a lifetime.

This is my first message in over a year due to the loss of my computor. You'll be glad to know that it didn't suffer long and it's passing will be remembered fondly. Now to the living... I must say that the Reunion was a smashing hit in my never to be humble appinion! My thanks to John Hunter and Don Metler for letting me tag along with them. It must have seemed like having an annoying little brother along, Well, I had a great time and am looking forward to Charlston in '06! After the dismall M-Div showing at the reunion, I took it upon myself to track down a few of my friends from the past and hopefully a few more engineers will make the next party! Untill next time, keep it between the ditches.

HANCOCK ASSOCIATION MEMBERS. You are invited to attend the opening of a new exhibit aboard the USS Lexington Museum in Corpus Christi, Texas, on Saturday, September 11, 2004 at 2:00 PM.

The exhibit is the Robert Earley Memorial Chapel. It memorializes the Chaplains who served aboard USS Lexington, and also the Lexington Museum volunteers and Board members who have passed on. It is named for Robert Earley, who headed the City’s Convention and Visitors Bureau before moving to Lexington to become the first Executive Director of the Museum.

The significance to us is that a small part of the memorial chapel is being made into the Hancock exhibit. Since we do not yet have an extensive collection of items to be displayed, this is working out fine, and is better than waiting with no exhibit until a larger collection of artifacts has been accumulated. The exhibit is not yet completed, but many of the items available have been put in place.

Hancock Association members who come aboard Lexington on Saturday, September 11 to attend the opening of the Memorial Chapel will be admitted without charge. This is by authority of the Executive Director, Rocco Montesano, Captain USN Retired. Captain Montesano especially desires that you make your presence known to him so that he will be aware of how many Hancock people are there, and can make appropriate acknowledgement of our presence during the dedication ceremony.

I regret that I will be out of town and will be unable to attend the dedication ceremony, or see any of you at the time you visit for the ceremony.

It would be nice if we could have a nice crowd of Hancock people.

For Anker, who posted below. The quarterdeck log section of the Association web site is intended to serve as a "find shipmate" service. Make your inquiries on the quarterdeck log. If you want to search more seriously for people or for a group, join the Association. You'll get a free roster of members, and I will be able to give extra assistance in your search for particular parties.

Wish to advise that Patricia Jones, wife of the late Lt. Colonel Donald R. Jones, passed away on August 8, 2004 in Fairfax. VA. Her husband, a former Association member, had served aboard the Hancock between 1956-58 as commanding officer of the Marine Detachment. His decorations include the Navy Cross, Silver Star, Bronze Star with Combat V, and Purple Heart.

Recently, Patricia Jones and I became good friends, a relationship which essentially developed after my attendance at the funeral of her husband at Arlington National Cemetery in mid-September 2003. She, too, will be buried there on September 28 2004.

Pat Jones also was a close friend of Peggy Odend'hal, the wife of Captain Charles J. Odend'hal who was CO of the Hancock from 1957-58. As Captain Odend'hal's orderly, I was aware that Patricia and Peg provided a great deal of mutual support to each other while both were living in Alameda, particularly when the Hancock was deployed overseas.

HANCOCK REVISED HISTORY BOOK price is $54.00. Turner Publishing returned some material to me and included an order blank for the book which showed a price of $58.00 for the standard edition. I complained to them because we have been advertising $54.00. They accepted my complaint and have agreed to a price of $54.00 instead of $58.00 as shown on some of their forms.

HANCOCK HISTORY BOOK. Turner Publishing returned some material to me, and included an order form for the revised history book. The order form listed a price of $58.00 for the standard edition. I pointed out that we have advertised a price of $54.00. In their response to me, they agreed to $54.00. The proper price is $54.00 not $58.00. Has anyone received their book yet?

Forgive me for butting in here. I have a question re: the Hancock in 44. My brother was an F6F pilot in VF 7 on the Hannah from the beginning to his death on Nov. 19, 1944. He was killed when returning to the ship after a mission. He was advised to bail out over the water and wait to be picked up. When the boats looked for him, he was never found. His nam is LTjg, George W. Reeves USNR

Now to my question? How can I recvieve a copy of the Hannah's updated history book?

Please advise to my e-mail addy.

Sincerely EOC Dave W. Reeves USNR-Ret. 37 years in Seabees, Korea and RVN vet.

Diane (Weintraub) Holik, who posted below, would like to know if there is any way for her to obtain photos taken by her grandfather Harry Weintraub when he was a photograper (PHOM3C). Maybe our member the photographer Mike Postolan, Sr. can offer some assistance. Her grandfather died on board Jan. 21, 1945. Presumably he was one of the casualties when a 500-lb. bomb exploded about 1330 that date on the flight deck. It fell from the bombbay of a VT-7 TBF Avenger after it landed and as it taxiied forward. According to Assn Past President Dave Reineman, a flight deck ordnanceman who was close by but survived the blast, the normal procedure for the Avenger was to open the bomb bay doors after landing. Before the pilot did so, a visual inspection was supposed to be made by one of the crewmen. Apparently there was a way he could look into the bomb bay. The inspection was to insure the bomb bay was clear. It is assumed that the crewman was unable to perform the inspection because of injuries received on the flight. In any case, when the doors were opened, an armed 500 pounder fell to the deck and exploded. The three crewmen died, and 52 men on the flight deck died. 75 were injured. In the revised history book, pages 41 & 42 briefly tell of this and there are pictures of the flight deck and of the mass burials at sea from the #2 aircraft elevator. Page 162 tells Dave Reinemans's story. Suggestions about how she may search for photos made by her grandfather are welcome.

For Diane (Weintraub) Holik, who posted below. It is indeed nice to hear from you. We have established connections with so many people in your circumstances. Are you aware that Harry Weintraub, PHOM3C, is listed as a World War II casualty on the commemorative plaque aboard the USS YORKTOWN (CV-10) Museum in South Carolina? His name was also included in the Memorial Program which we distributed at our last reunion in San Francisco in May. If you can give me the date of his death, we may be able to tell you how he died. Most deaths occurred as a result of (a) the kamikaze hit or (b) the operational accident in which a hung bomb fell from a plane which had just landed, and exploded. The Association still has over 400 members who were aboard in World War II. Email me off-site if you have questions.

2006 REUNION. This Association site's home page and reunion page now show that the reunion will be held in the Charleston - Mt. Pleasant area of South Carolina. Patriot's Point (with Yorktown CV-10 Museum) is at Mt. Pleasant. The membership voted to have the reunion there. I believe that the Association President and President-elect feel that this is "their" reunion in that they bear the responsibility for it. I believe this is right and proper. It goes without saying that members are welcome to make comments and suggestions. If you post an opinion or a suggestion on this web site, they will see it. If you have been to Charleston you might have something you want to tell about. I am sure that it will be a great reunion regardless of the details of the arrangements.

HANCOCK HISTORY BOOK, 2ND EDITION. Was emailed from publisher on Thursday books would be shipped "this week." I emailed if he meant on 8/13; received no answer. They sent me an advance copy over a week ago. Hard to figure what's going on. The rep said he was pushing the warehouse guys to get it shipped. The shipmates who sent in material for the revised book are going to be delighted, because I think they published all the new material which was sent in from me and from others. When you get your book, let me know what you think. (Note to web master: maybe you can edit out that misfire I sent a few minutes ago. I guess I mistakenly hit "enter" when I shouldn't have.)

STATUS OF HANCOCK EXHIBIT ABOARD YORKTOWN MUSEUM AT PATRIOT'S POINT, SC. Ed Orchowski, Hancock Ass'n. Founder, has been briefed by the Yorktown people on the status of our exhibit. It is still in the process of being moved from its previous location to a more suitable location. We don't have a prospective completion date, but it will not be ready by the time of the reunion of the Yorktown Association in October (Oct 7-9, 2004). Ed will be at the Yorktown reunion and has arranged for any Hancock people at the Yorktown reunion to receive a briefing from the Yorktown Museum about plans for the Hancock exhibit.

1970-72 Hancock sailors take note! Excerpt from the humorous documentary "The True Story of Events on the 'Old Hancock' on her (Last?) Visit to the War, Oct. 70- June 71" authored by the Air Intelligence Officers on that cruise: "...positions of responsibility were filled by strange creatures - Pinwheel and a giant BEAR in Strike Center, Elmer Fudd and a wabbit in CIC, Linus in the Air Boss's chair, Colonel Stackgas in Engineering (a man who delights in putting oil in the drinking water and smoke along the glide slope)..." What I am getting at is, I am proud to announce that the newest member of the Association is none other than COLONEL STACKGAS of the famed 1970-71 cruise! After years of searching, I found him settled and happy near the cradle of naval aviation, claiming many friends among the retired naval aviator set. He is Vince Cooke, CAPT USN Retired, who was Chief Engineer 1970-72. His name and address will appear among the new members in the next Hannah News.

ORISKANY SINKING DELAYED. New window of September set for reef. For complete story, see August 4, 2004 Pensacola News Journal story. pensacolanewsjournal.com. By Doug Haller @PensacolaNewsJournal.com

The Oriskany will not reach the depths of the Gulf of Mexico until mid-September, at the earliest. WHERE IT SITS: Texas Dock and Rail in Corpus Christi, Texas. WHEN IT LEAVES: Early September. TRAVEL TIME: Four or five days to Pensacola, depending on sea conditions. PREPARATIONS IN PENSACOLA: Three to four weeks. SINK DATE: To be announced. The Navy and the Environmental Protection Agency on Tuesday delayed the decommissioned aircraft carrier's Pensacola arrival for a month, giving both parties more time to resolve issues relating to polychlorinated biphenyls on the vessel.

Pat Dolan, department director for the Naval Sea System Command's office of congressional and public affairs, said the Navy continues to work with EPA Region IV to obtain a risk-based disposal permit, a prerequisite to sinking the ship as an artificial reef.

Great site; thanks for all your hard work. Just e-mailed for membership info for Dad. He has fond memories & would love to hear from old shipmates, especially flyboys. Mentioned 2 by name: Darryl Grant, Arthur Flynn, so I thought I'd post here. Anyone know what squadron had Felix the Cat w/a bomb logo? That was his but I don't know the number. Thanks! Liz Hall E-mail me & I'll pass it along. Best regards.

For Brian Spencer, who posted on 7/25 and said his uncle Edgar Stebbins was Commanding Officer of Hancock. Brian, the Hancock history book does not list a Stebbins as CO among the 25 it lists. Sure you've got the right ship? There were a bunch of Essex class carriers. Also there was USS John Hancock DD-981; it was decommissioned in October 2000.

Among the members of the USS Hancock Association, we have this living legend, John W. Finn. He is the oldest living Medal of Honor recipient, and the only living Medal of Honor recipient for actions on December 7, 1941, Pearl Harbor Day. Today, July 23, is John's birthday. He is 95 years young today. He was an Aviation Chief Ordnanceman on December 7, 1941, in a patrol squadron at NAS Kaneohe Bay on Oahu. Later in World War II, he was V-3 Division Officer aboard Hancock. Happy Birthday, John, from your Hancock Association shipmates!

Nice words from Frank Ereneta, one of John Finn's friends in San Diego. quote: It is Sunday morning, 10:45 AM (PDT). I just hung up the phone with Former Aviation Chief Ordnanceman, Lieutenant John W. Finn, USN (Ret.) who just completed an enjoyable breakfast. I speak to Finn almost daily and visit him several times per week. Finn enthusiastically looks forward to his ninety-fifth (95th) birthday next Saturday, 24 July 2004. unquote

MORE ON ORISKANY. I just received the Summer 2004 issue of "Fly By," the newsletter publication of the National Museum of Naval Aviation and the Naval Aviation Museum Foundation. It has a big two page (14" x 17" pages) spread about Oriskany. Also it says, "View more images of Oriskany in the new on-line exhibit featured on the Museum's website at http://naval.aviation.museum. The exhibit can be accessed using the quick menu on the front page of the site." I didn't check it out. All the best, Wimbo

My dad, Albin A. Susnik served on the Hancock from May - Sept 1945. He was a S1cAOM, and I believe he may have been a turret gunner on TBM's. My dad passed away in 2000, and I am trying to find anyone who knew my dad from his Navy days on the Hannah. Thanks in advance and God bless you all.

One of my Demon buddies in Pensacola informed me that today's (6/26) Pensacola News Journal contains an update on ex-USS Oriskany. Their web site is easy to find --- just search pensacolanewsjournal. Highlights of the article are: Hoped for arrival in Pensacola -- early August. A demolition team will go to work at Pensacola to prepare the ship for scuttling. Oriskany vets may be permitted a limited onboard tour while the ship is in Pensacola. They're hoping to do the scuttling in early September. The scuttling or reefing location will be 25 miles Southeast of Pensacola Pass. The sinking will be slow and unspectacular. The flight deck will be 130 deep.

Hello to all ! I am still looking for anybody who was in #1 Fireroom 73-75. I have been fortunate to contact some good friends and old shipmates. This is the first time in along time getting back on this site and it sure brings back some strong memories. Remember the smells of the ship, JP5 , stack gas, steam, and smelly sailors, except the smell of "french whores" at Liberty, the donuts frying in the morning was the best. How many of you wish we could time travel and make just one more Wespac? It all seems so long ago. I sure enjoyed my youth, it was a wonderful time in my life as it should be for all, no responsibilities, living for the moment, not a care in the world. Well I just wanted to update my e-mail addy and best wishes for all, and a big thanks to Don for all the work he does , it was good talking to you a couple of years ago. Also I am looking for a "100 missions over shit river patch" if any body knows were I can get one. God bless you all, and the same thing I tell all Vets that I run into "thanks"

Members: Just a suggestion. If you are trying to locate a specific shipmate when you make an entry to this website, try including information as to where the shipmate was originally from. This might help other members who know where they are now, or what became of them. I have had some luck locating former shipmates with a search engine if I know where they came from. Regards.

RESPONSE TO THOMAS E. HAWLEY'S RECENT POST. Thomas, you are a member. Welcome aboard. We are glad to have you. I have recorded your data and sent your check to the Treasurer to be deposited. He will send you a membership card as soon as he reasonably can. You will be receiving a June Hannah News in a few days. I didn't receive your application in time to list you as a new member in the June Hannah News, but I did receive it in time to include you in the mailing list sent to the printer. You will be listed as a new member in the September issue. As a new member, you rate a roster of the membership. You will be receiving it in due course. I will send it to you as soon as I reasonably can. The Association has no clerical staff to respond immediately to new business, or any business for that matter. The Web Site Manager, the Treasurer, the Membership Chairman, and the Newsletter Editor are merely good hearted souls, somewhat gullible, willing to spend a lot of personal time on Association business. We try not to be too hard on them.

MEMO FOR ROBIN MEEK, who recently posted. The Hancock Association has nearly 1,500 members. Most of them served aboard in World War II or during the 50s, 60s, and 70s. We do have over 100 "associate" members who didn't serve aboard - they are widows, children, or relatives of former Hancock sailors. You are eligible to join as such. New members receive a roster of the membership, which gives names, addresses, and dates of Hancock service. I also will help members by researching our records of previous members or deceased members. We don't release membership information to non-members of the Association. If you are seriously interested in pursuing your Dad's naval history, this would be a good way to start. You can find information on the site about how to join. If you have any questions, please E-mail me.

Subject: John Finn. Ass'n members know that the oldest living Medal of Honor Recipient, and only living Pearl Harbor Day Medal of Honor recipient, John Finn, served aboard Hancock and is an Association member. Many also know that John fell recently at the WWII memorial dedication in Washington. John is recuperating now. His address is below if anyone wants to send him a card. He is being well taken care of by the Ordies in San Diego, and others. I obtained this address through the Ordies (Ass'n. of Aviation Ordnancemen); they are circulating it, so I think it is no longer "sensitive" information. Hi Shipmates,

So glad everyone had such a great time at the reunion. Definitely hope to make the next one in SC.

I had been meaning to tell a little story about a conversation I had with a fellow Marine aboard the Hancock in 1957, We had just returned from a West Pac deployment and the ship's CO, Captain Charles J. Odend'hal, instructed me(I was his orderly) to go below decks to the Wardroom and escort a visiting Marine officer up to the bridge. Captain Odend'hal was preparing to take the ship out to sea for the day and was interested in meeting this Marine, time permitting.

Finding the officer amid the numerous other official visitors was not too difficult (we seemed to notice each other immediately). Arriving with him topside, however, it became clear that Captain Odend'hal was preoccupied coordinating with the pilot while navigating the ship through the Golden Gate. Consequently, the Marine officer and I were required to wait just outside the bridge before there were formal introductions. We engaged in personal conversation for about an hour. I was so impressed by this Marine officer's humility, soft spoken nature of his voice, keen interest in the functions of the Hancock's Marine Detachment, and in my own recently acquired responsibilities as an 18-year old father. He never displayed any of the qualities or characteristics that might remind one of a superior/subordinate relationship. He made this young orderly very comfortable. I thought to myself later, beside being a superb military officer, what a gracious and unassuming man.

Oh, yes! His name was Major John Glenn, and he had just set a new transcontinental speed record as project officer of the F8U Crusader. We know the rest of the story.

I was a lot of places and did a lot of things while I was in the Navy but I think the time aboard Hannah was about the best. A few "snapshots" come to mind...Watching blue water coming over the forward flight deck during a typhoon off Okinawa - F-8 cat shots at night - flying fish in the bow wave at sunrise - and those dam' UNREP work parties. Hope to hear from some of the guys I served with.

I was a Machine Account 2nd Class. My duty was to insure IBM Data processing machines keep running.

Also would like to communicate with anyone with proof we were exposed to agent orange aboard ship.

To everyone involved in the planning of the reunion I want to say thanks and well done. It was great to see old friends and have the opportunity to visit with other members. I'm looking forward to the next reunion in SC and time to visit with everyone again. If you haven't attended a reunion I urge you to take the time to join the association and make plans to attend. Again, thanks for the fantastic job you did.

Memo for Bryan Enslein, who is looking for anyone who served with his grandfather James Stuhlman aboard Hancock during WWII. Bryan, you can take two approaches. 1. You can wait and see if any information comes your way. It may or it may not. 2. If you are seriously interested, and want to really pursue your interest, there is a way for you to do so. As a relative of a Hancock sailor, we would welcome you as an Associate Member of the Hancock Association. If you joined,
