Comments about the web site: I passed the rating exam in Hong Kong harbor to become an ATN-3, which should have gotten me out of unreps, but didn't. Was standing watch on the hanger bay deck one night when someone made what I thought was a bad joke about our President being shot, then stood a flight deck parade for JFK. Spent Sunday afternoons on the forward flight deck along with a lot of othe guys, gettin some sun. Got lots of memories of the Hancock. Ran into about six or seven other guys in a diesel school at Portland Community College back in about '73 who had all been on her at one time or another. Back then I was Rick. Thanks for bringing back memories! morgan

Comments about the web site: Congratulations on your great work with the web site, Don. The site is really keeping me hopping sending information on the Association to prospective members. Makes me feel very good to see that so many people look back with pride on their time aboard Hannah. I certainly take pride in my time aboard. She was the best ship I served in, and I was aboard a bunch. Those years were a time of turbulence for the Navy, but when we put to sea, and especially whlle on Yankee Station, the work got done in grand style. That air wing flew in the worst weather I've ever seen flown in. The engineers kept everything going, and everyone from the bilges to the top of the island really produced. Hancock had a superb reputation among the high brass on the West coast and in the Seventh Fleet. Keep up the good work, Don. Tom Wimberly, Hancock Association Membership Chairman.

Comments about the web site: I've been doing searches for websites on old ships, and for some reason, it never occurred to me until tonight to search for any sites on the Hancock. I submitted a pic of the Hancock in drydock in Hunter's Point in 1970, and will look for more. I'm afraid I wasn't a good sailor at the time...I was quite an anti-war activist, but with so much time gone by, all I can remember are the good times! I especially loved Subic Bay!

Comments about the web site: As organist for protestant devine services, I got to play the big Hammond in the hangar bay. Right after I came aboard at Alameda, we went to drydock at Hunter's Point. My division officer, a "Mustang Ensign" didn't like me, so I was reassigned to fire watch (for the civilian welders). Summer of 1959 we went under the Golden Gate, headed for WESPAC. While on secondry battery security watch, from the 05 deck, witnessed crash of an F3H fighter. He had a flameout. and hit the fatail seconds after the crash signal sounded. I can still see that pilot, "frozen" at the controls. It rolled over the side at the forward port five inch gun tub. He failed to eject and we never found him. Visited Hawaii, I was there the day they became a state...what a party...sailors got the royal treatment. also visited Kwajalein (Marshall Islands), Guam, and the Phillipines. Next stop was Japan, but due to a SNAFU, my name appeared on the list to return to the States for discharge (a year early). After they got that straightened out, got assigned to the USS Sperry, a sub tender at San Diego. I reported aboard, having lost my orders and service record, but that's another "sea story."

I thought about all my shipmates a lot while interred with four CAG-21 shipmates in the Hanoi Hilton. The dedication of the Hancock and CAG-21 crew helped me re-dedicate myself when things, ahem, got tough with the "Bad Guys."

KAUFFMAN. I FOUND OUT ABOUT THE ASSOCIATION THROUGH AN ACQUAINTANCE THAT I MET AT WAR EAGLE CRAFT FAIR IN NORTHERN ARAKANSAS SEVERAL YEARS AGO. I WAS SORRY TO HEAR THAT THE HANCOCK HAD BEEN SCRAPPED, BUT I UNDERSTAND THAT THE SHIPS BELL AND PLACK ARE ON THE YORKTOWN. PLEASE LET ME HEAR FROM ANY OF YOU. I ALSO AM LOOKING FOR OUR CRUISE BOOK "STRIKE" FOR THAT CRUISE. MINE HAS BEEN LOST.

Comments about the web site: uss hanna the ship you loved to hate. i miss the old girl but while on it cursed it daily. the crowded chow lines, the captains impulsive desire to have this the oldest in the active fleet look like the newest, the boot camp methods of on board life, the noise, the leaky berthing compartments, the bozos who seemed to out rank me and stand always in my path, but for all i hated about the hancock there is much to miss and love. i miss my ship mates, the fun, the adventure, the politics, the game, smoking cigarettes on the fan tail during flight ops, roosting on the mast instead of doing antennae maintenance and marveling at nature and this vast ocean of blue. i miss the hancock too, i was one of the last to leave and soon returned to help new ship mates salvage electronic gear off of it prior to scrapping, and arrived to find her rusting, dirty, chopped full of holes, it brought tears to my eyes to see the old girl abused so. funny how navy life is... you hate it so much you love it. safe seas to you all fellow shipmates.. etr3 fetters

Comments about the web site: I've got some pretty fond memories of my time on Hanna's flight deck, especially when immediately following the trap of a Whale, we had to dash out and torque the tail hook - still have one in the garage as a souvenir! Had an F-8 hit the throttle a bit hard heading for the starboard cat one day and being a plane captain for the Whale, I was out in front. The blast blew my legs out from under me and my good buddy Jim Robbins who was near the port main mount, dove across my legs pinning me to the deck - saving me from an unplanned trip over the side. What memories - what a nice website and tribute to the ole girl!

Comments about the web site: I am happy to see progress being made in the Hancock web site. It looks like it's going to be a winner when it is complete. I have not logged on since I joined the assn. a couple of years ago. I ran into a BT that was on the Hancock when I was aboard while on a charter fishing trip out of San Francisco in 2000. We did not know each other while serving on board, but it was good to share a few stories.

Comments about the web site: I read Rich Hood's comments above, and sent him an E-mail. Then it occurred to me to post it on the web site. Here is my E-mail to Rich: Rich, nice to see your entry in the log on the web site. You said: "I am having trouble accepting the punishment the Commander[Capt] of the submarine accident off Oahu. I feel we just lost a Great Leader. Any comments? It really upset me. Rich Hood" I join you in your admiration for the way Commander Waddle has handled himself since the accident. Despite the advice of his lawyers, he took the stand with no guarantee of immunity. He insisted on personally apologizing to some of the families; he did this own his own I understand. But the Navy has always prided itself on strict accountability of those placed in command positions, especially captains of ships. The captain of a ship is delegated awesome authority; he is the law when that ship is at sea. He can force compliance with just about anything he comes up with. In return, he is held absolutely responsible. Innumerable captains have been relieved of command or suffered an extreme black mark on their records because of this accountability. In many, many cases, the captain has suffered even though the mistake was not at all his fault. The most typical example would be a collision or a near miss at night when the captain is asleep and is trusting his Officer of the Deck. The captain has issued, and the OOD has read and initialed, the "Captain's Night Orders." A typical stipulation in the captain's night orders would be something like, call me if you have a radar contact and plot the closest point of approach to be within 5,000 yards. The OOD is informed of such a contact, but doesn't call the captain. Things turn to worms and there is a collision while the captain is still asleep. Finding of the Board of Inquiry: the Captain is at fault; he didn't train his deck watch to obey his orders. Those in command positions in the Navy have lived comfortably with this policy for generations. We take pride in it. In the case of the submarine CO, the facts were not at all like the example above. This CO seriously failed in his responsibilities. He agrees that he did. He is the one who looked through the periscope and failed miserably to see a contact he should have seen. He had a crew that slacked in their duties, perhaps because of the festive atmosphere with the guests. That is precisely the time they should have made sure they were doing everything exactly right; they should have been trained to think that way. I understand that one man who should have had a handle on the surface plot, which would have shown the fishing vessel nearby, essentially slacked his duties. And then, at the most critical time, when the CO was looking through the periscope, this man did nothing. Then when the CO saw nothing through the periscope, and reported that, the man used that to justify continuing to ignore information that would have been available if he had been doing his job. What kind of training is that? Who is responsible for that training? The CO. He agrees. He hasn't alibied or blamed subordinates. He knew he had to accept full responsibility, and greatly to his credit, he has done so. I think a lot of things have gone wrong in the modern Navy, but I don't think we will ever give up that absolute accountability of command at sea. We shouldn't. Your opinion is as good as mine, Rich, and I respect it. My comments are based on a 31 year career starting as a seaman recruit and finishing as a captain. I had command of a fighter squadron and a major shore installation. I wanted a carrier, but the odds were slim and I didn't make the cut. All the best, Tom

Hunters Point shipyard too. and on at least One of the Yankee Station Cruises. I was honored to have met The Late ADM Buchwald from NAVSHIPS during an INSURV Inspection of the HANNAH, the guy was a Genius! He was firm but fair, and you couldn't BS this guy at all. Trying to keep the Hull and all the LifeRafts and Boats in good order, wasn't an easy job but someone had to do it! I recall many a nighttime UNREP and the serious Groaning of our 30 year old winches when the AOE's would slip in an overweight load of Bombs. I remember the speed that the Hong Kong Side Cleaners painted the HANNAH's Hull for our Garbage and Junk Brass fittings. They were challenging but fufilling times for me in my professional growth.
