Comments about the web site: Enjoyed the website, especially the
later-year pictures. I made all of the 70-71 WESPAC and nine months of the 71-72
deployment. Seen a few familiar names in the log from VA-212, like
"JD", an AO with us in '70. I remember seeing Sammy Davis Jr. and Miss
America. I remember loosing an anchor in Hong Kong when we "dropped
anchor". I remember the CNO, Adm. Zumwalt coming aboard and then voting to
extend the deployment for a liberty call in Sydney, Australia. And of course,
who couldn't forget "crossing the equator". Other memories bring to
mind trips to DaNang to repair bingo'd birds, loosing aircraft to ramp strikes
or a cold-cat shot, and loosing our squadron CO and XO. I remember the day I
flew off the Hancock headed for CONUS and separation. It was a day long awaited,
but filled with mixed emotions for the guys that were staying behind. I served
with great guys at a not-so-popular time, but if having to do it all again, I
wouldn't hesitate. In fact, I wish I could make just one more deployment onboard
Hancock with VA-212. I know that Hancock with her A-4's and F-8's could really
do a job in Afghanistan!

Comments about the web site: Visiting this site back lots of memories. I
was fortunate enough to do two WESTPAC tours on the Hanna before getting
discharged in November 1973. I parted ways with the proud gal while in Hong Kong
and flew back to the states via Clark AFB. Upon returning to civilian life,
coincidentally my boss (Jerry Nolan) turned out to be an original "plank
holder" of the Hanna back when she was first commissioned and put into
service during WWII. We had some great times swapping stories about the Hanna,
unforunately I lost track of him back in 1976 when I changed jobs. Having been
in a PT2 in VFP-63/Det-1, I've got air-to-surface photos of Hanna and air-to-air
shots of sister sqadrons from CVW-21 from those fond days. Let me know if you're
interested and I might be able to scan some and e-mail them for this site.

Comments about the web site: If you were aboard the HANNA in April '75
during OPERATION EAGLE PULL & FREQUENT WIND (Evacs of Phonm Phenh and
Saigon) you need to support the effort of extending the eligibility date for the
Vietnam Service Medal (VSM) and Vietnam Campaign Medal (VCM). Sailors and
marines who served on those ops. received the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal
because eligibility for the VSM and VCM ended on 28 MARCH 73 when our POWs were
repatriated from Hanoi. However, thousands of sailors, marines, soldiers, and
airmen continued to serve (and die) for the RVN either aboard ship, in aircraft,
as embassy marines, ARVN advisors, or DAO staff until 30 APRIL 75 when Saigon
fell. Additionally, 41 marines/corpsman and airmen were KIA and KIA/MIA two
weeks later on 15 MAY 75 during the SS MAYAGUEZ RECOVERY/BATTLE of KOH TANG
ISLAND. Had Phonm Phenh and Saigon not fallen the Khmer Rouge never would have
been in a position to seize this merchant vessel and we would not have sustained
such losses. As a fellow shipmate I'm asking for your support in helping us get
ALL vietnam veterans the honor and recognition we/they deserve. The 1st
Battalion/9th Marines Assoc., the 2nd Battalion/9thMarines Assoc; 3rd Marine
Division Assoc.; and the USMC Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Assoc. (Pop-A-Smoke) are
asking their members to support this. How can you help? All you have to do is
drop me an e-mail and I'll send you a copy of the letter I've written to
President Bush. You can edit it or use it as is...just put your name to it and
mail it most ricki-tic. Also send it, or another letter, to Sec.Def. Donald
Rumsfeld and SecNav Gordon England. Also send it to your congressman and
senators. Last year the Fall of Saigon Marines Assoc. helped get legislation
passed through the House of Representatives that endorsed changing the
eligibility date to only 30 APRIL 75. But the Bill died in the Senate because
they thought it should be the DoD and Services that should determine eligibility
for medals...'round and 'round we go... Fellas it's going to take and Executive
Order from President Bush to push this through. That's why we need his help. By
the way, it was President Johnson who in 1965 created the VSM and VCM through an
Executive Order. E-mail me at: Mick7Nyyankee@aol.com SEMPER Fidelis

Comments about the web site: I see that the comments section has been
upgraded since I last logged on to the Hanna site, so I thought I would re-enter
my info, in an attempt to locate past friends on the Hanna and on the island of
Guam. I was stationed on Guam in 1959 to VCP-61 Photo Squadron. While on Guam I
went on several detachments to various carriers that were on sea duty in the
West Pacific. The 1st detachment for me was to replace our 1st crew that was
sent to the Oriskany CVA-34. Their airplane crashed at sea outside of Okinawa,
killing all 20 plus on board. I lost several good friends in that crash. This
was in 1960. The Oriskany was at sea and we flew to the ship and caught the
wire. What an experience and thrill. I also went on other detachments and served
time aboard the Coral Sea CVA-43, Bennington CVA-20 and the Lexington CVA-16. In
late 1962 I was reassigned from VCP-61 to ships company on the U.S.S. Hancock
CVA-19. I was in S-6 Division from 1962 to 1964, when I was discharged from the
Navy. If anyone was part of what I have detailed, please don’t be shy. Email
me so we can tell lies about the good old days. Oh yes, one other thing. I am
hoping someone can give me some information about a photo in the Photo Gallery,
Volume I, Page 2, 2nd row, 2nd picture from the left hand side of the page. I
believe the picture was taken about 39 years ago, but my memory is fading
somewhat. I believe the 3rd person from the left is me. I cannot recall the name
of the 1st person from the left, however, the 2nd person from the left looks
like Gerald N. Drozdowski, AK-1. The fourth from the left looks like M. G. Doyps.
I may be incorrect, but if anyone knows the history of this picture, please
email me, so I can get some sleep! If you have a log 19 dated 1962, WestPac
Cruise, Check pg. 128 S-6 Division and the 3 people I have listed above can be
found for comparison. I am the tall one in the back row. Since first visiting
this site, this particular picture has been very much on my mind, and if there
is anyone out there who can inform me as to its background - I would be most
appreciative!

I THINK ALL OF THEM WERE IN THE 5TH DIVISION,BUT AM NOT SURE. ONLY THE ABOVE
INFO IS ON THE PHOTO, NO FIRST NAMES. IF ANY OF THE ABOVE SHIPMATES ARE STILL
ALIVE AND ARE MEMBERS OF OUR ASSOCIATION, COULD YOU PLEASE PASS ON THEIR

Comments about the web site: THE 2004 USS HANCOCK ASSOCIATION REUNION. I
have asked an organization called "Armed Forces Reunions" to act as
our agent and negotiate for the 2004 reunion to be held in the San Francisco Bay
area. I hope that a reunion in that location will appeal to many of you because
our ship was homeported at NAS Alameda during her post-World War II service.
Armed Forces Reunions has been in business for about twelve years and they have
a good reputation. The proposal for a Bay Area reunion will be briefed at the
membership meeting at New Orleans, and the members will vote. I have heard that
there also may be proposals to have the 2004 reunion in Salt Lake City or in
Charleston, SC. Retired CWO Wayne Erven will head up our proposal effort for a
Bay Area reunion. He lives in Pleasanton, CA and his E-mail address is oldsalt@iwon.com.
If you have suggestions or questions, let him know; please make me a "copy
to" on your message. It looks like I will move from Association
President-elect to President at the New Orleans meeting. I plan to keep the
Membership Chairman duties. All the best, Tom.

Comments about the web site: I visited the former NAS Alameda a few weeks
ago while on a trip to visit Wayne Erven in Pleasanton. It is sad to see NAS
Alameda -- our former hub of activity -- almost deserted and dead. All the gates
and streets are open. You can drive anywhere. Some of the hangars and industrial
spaces have been rented out -- a truck drivers school is among the tenants. Some
of the quarters are occupied; I don't know by whom. The Air Station admin
building is in use; it is labeled "Alameda City Hall West." The Clubs,
the gym, the recreational areas are dead. The exchange and commissary area,
which we remember as animated and active and crowded with our shipmates and
loved ones going about the business of their lives, is deserted and still and
boarded up. The piers are quiet. They are populated with logistics ships (USNS
maritime prepositioning ships?) -- about 8 or 10 of them. No outward signs of
life. The North side of pier 3 is occupied by the USS HORNET Museum, which, on a
drizzly Wednesday morning in February, was practically lifeless. HORNET sits
there like a ghost of the past. It was good to see the familiar form of an
Essex-class carrier, and to appreciate that we have her on display there. It was
sad to realize that our old home station is a thing of the past. We did a lot of
living there, and a lot of history was made there.

Comments about the web site: ABOUT THE REUNION IN 2004. We are
considering proposals, and the matter will be decided at the 2002 Reunion in New
Orleans in May. There are some indications that we are pointed toward at least
one proposal for the 2004 reunion to be in the month of May. Apparently it is a
good month for hotel rates. If there are strong feelings about what month the
reunion should be held, let me know. Is May as good as any other month?

Comments about the web site: GOOD LUCK STORY!! On March 29, I made an
entry on this site saying I was trying to help a shipmate obtain a copy of
Hannah's last cruise book. Actually it was the son of a shipmate. Would you
believe it -- last night I sent the son a message saying that a copy of that
cruisebook would soon be on the way to him. What great luck! And it would not
have been possible without the contributions of two people in particular. Thanks
to Bob Molleston, Association President 1996-98 (VB-6, 1945, and a member of the
Combat Aircrew Hall of Fame at Charleston) who brought the Association into the
information age by getting us a web site about four years ago, and thanks to Don
Mettler (B Div., BT-3, in No. 4 Fireroom four years, 1971-75) who took over the
site in late 2000 and dramatically upgraded the site. And what fun to help
someone in this manner!

Comments about the web site: In an April 6 entry on the web site, Matt
Johnson said it was too bad Hancock wasn't made into a museum. I agree, but she
was scrapped in 1976 (I believe) at Long Beach. Bruce Boland, who had duty
aboard Hannah as an F-8 squadron CO (VF-24) and as ship's Ops Officer, was CO of
an auxilliary ship which was in Long Beach at the time Hannah was scrapped. He
was able to visit her. Bruce, now a retired Rear Admiral (and an Association
member!) says Hannah's pilot house, bridge and primary fly station were taken
off and sent to the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum in Washington, DC, to be
incorporated into an exhibit. I remember visiting that exhibit, and it seems to
me that they tell that the bridge and pri fly were from Hancock, but I am not
sure. Recently I decided to search the Smithsonian web site. I found the exhibit
and was happy to see it was listed as a "permanent" exhibit. On line,
when you visit the Smithsonian web site and go to that exhibit, there is a photo
taken from the after part of the pilot house looking forward. It shows the wheel
on the left and the engine order telegraph on the right. To my recollection,
this is not the layout that existed aboard Hannah and the other Essex class
carriers I served in. The station of the helmsman at the wheel was centered in
the pilot house, and to his left was the lee helmsman who manned the engine
order telegraph. Now my question is, is the actual exibit in the Museum laid out
improperly, or did the photo just get reversed when they put it into their web
site? Let's get to the bottom of this! Surely among our Association members,
some are going to visit Washington DC this summer. Go to the exhibit and check
it out. Is the wheel on the left of the engine order telegraph, or is it the
other way around? Right now you can check what I am talking about on the
National Air & Space Museum web site. The site address is http://www.nasm.si.edu/
That will get you to the home page. Click on "Exhibitions," and then
scroll down to "Second Floor Galleries" and select "Sea-Air
Operations." Then go to "Bridge" to see the photo I have referred
to. Would love to hear your comments. Are there some of you who stood watches at
the wheel or the engine order telegraph?

Comments about the web site: In response to my entry a few days ago about
a part of USS Hancock being in the National Air & Space Museum, Bruce Tanner
sent me this message: I was glad to see your mention about the Hancock and the
Smithsonian. I was aboard until she decommissioned and was present when crews
were removing pieces from her marked for the Smithsonian. Parts of the ship were
being marked Smithsonian and then a couple of days later a crew would remove
them and cart them off. This was while the ship was still in Alameda. I was told
that the pieces were to be used to assemble a mock aircraft carrier at the
Smithsonian. I often wondered if it ever came to be but never heard that it did.
In 1995 I visited the Smithsonian Air & Space Museum. My Wife and I spent
the entire day there looking at the numerous exhibits. At the end of the day I
saw the mock carrier. I knew right off that at least parts of it were from the
Hancock as I recognized some of the parts that were removed while I was still
aboard. I felt as though I had found the "Hanna" but at the same time
I felt sad because I saw nothing there mentioning the Hancock. There was a large
model of the Enterprise CVN-65 at the entrance but I saw nothing about the
Hancock. Tom I feel we need to get the word out to the members that the Hancock
still exists. I also feel we need to do whatever it takes to get the Smithsonian
to recognize the Hancock. I feel the exhibit should be named the USS HANCOCK. I
know that a lot of the members that I met at the San Diego reunion wish that the
Ship would have become a museum especially the WW2 guys. The Hancock is in a
museum we just need to get it the recognition it so deserves. Let me know how I
can help. Bruce Tanner.

Comments about the web site: I am still looking for guys that I knew
aboard ship. Have found only one. Do any of you guys that were aboard remember
the typhoon that we went through between Pearl Harbour and Japan? That was quite
an experience for me. I remember the waves comming over the bow and barriers
that we had several aircraft tied down behind. Do you remember the Sparrow
missile that came loose from one of VA 116 Cutlass aircraft when landing and
nosed through the flight deck and the warhead penetrated the V-6 Electronics
compartment? Needless to say those guys evacuated that compartment pronto. Do
you remember the young FA who was electrocuted in one of our boilers? The
aircraft and pilots that went in the drink never to be seen again? Did you ever
sun bathe on the flight deck? Do you remember when the Hanna pulled into
Youkuska and the Yoktown was already in port and out guys got into a bloody
fight at one of the local bars and totally demolished it? If memory serves me
correctly both ship crews had to pay $1,000 to the owner. Do you remember when
they backed us into the pier in Yokuska with the bow pointing out over the bay
and launched aircraft out over the bay with our steam catapults? I wonder if
that was ever done again? The Hannah was truly an amazing ship and I was very
proud to have been one of her thousands of crew members. Let me hear from some
of you.

Comments about the web site: In response to Tom Wimberly's question
regarding the aircraft carrier's bridge at the National Air & Space Museum
in Washington D.C.: I've visited the museum & viewed the naval aviation
exhibit. If I'm not mistaken, the carrier bridge on display has an identifying
plaque that states the bridge was part of the Hancock. As far as the wheel &
telegraph being in reverse location: as an airdale I was never any closer to the
bridge than the O-7 level's observation deck. But, being an airdale & having
viewed the NASM's naval aviation exhibit, I was struck by the exhibit's A-4C
having the tail letters "NP". The "November Papa"
designation was assigned to Hancock aircraft. The assigned tail letters for the
Bonnie Dick's aircraft, such as is on display, was "NF". If anyone has
a further probable explanation, please post it. That's about all I can offer,
Tom. If possible, I'll email the NASM for further info.

Comments about the web site: In our Hancock Association records, this,
along with his address, phone number and E-mail address, is all that is shown:
Horn, Edward A. (wife: Evelyn Faye) V-1 Division, 1944-46 The following records
what this young man did aboard Hannah in 1945: The President of the United
States takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal to Edward Andrew Horn
Seaman First Class, United States Naval Reserve For service as set forth in the
following citation: "For heroic achievement while serving on board the
U.S.S. Hancock during operations against enemy Japanese forces off Okinawa Jima
on January 21, 1945. When a bomb of a newly-landed torpedo plane accidentally
exploded on the flight deck of his ship, Horn braved exploding ammunition and
spreading fire to man fire fighting equipment against the blaze, and to rescue
several wounded men from the burning area. His courage and devotion to duty were
in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service."
Horn is authorized to wear the Combat V. For the President signed James
Forrestal Secretary of the Navy Ed Horn received the decoration in ceremonies
aboard HANCOCK on June 6, 1945, from Admiral John S. McCain. His grandson
created a web page about Edward: The address is: http://www.geocities.com/lisenapieralski/horn

Andrew Horn died yesterday, April 18, 2002.
